Well,first at all.....Good morning everyone...

Move into the topic,I found that my simcity 4 has a hobby, that is "crash"

I try to find out the source....but It seem i failed.....but I found an interesting thing

Before my city population reach 40k,almost no crash, but after reach 40k and higher,it crash...almost few minutes once.

So,any good idea?

Do by reducing the size of my 447MB plugin folder could be a good suggestion?

btw,do your simcity 4 has this hobby too?

It's not the size of your plugin folder - I have over 4 GB, in my game, and it never crashes. However, you might have a bad plugin. Try playing without your plugins and see if the same thing happens.

Ops,it seem I posted it at the wrong place, nevermine.

    Hmm,what do bad plugin mean?

by the way,if I have a old graphic card(512MB if not mistaken),will it make it crash too?

An older, slower GPU won't crash the game, but it will run slow unless you turn the graphic settings down.

As said above, Plugins Suite size means nothing. Mine is 6-7GB and I know it isn't the problem.

A bad plugin means there's something in your Plugins folder that is making the game crash. You might want to test each item individually since your plugin suite is so small, and see what the problem is.

I can see frequent crashing if I zoom in and out a lot, particularly in a busy/built-up city (I normally save before doing this, nowadays). My Plugins folder is around 800MB and that seems to be no more of an issue than when it was half that size.

You could try starting a completely new region and a new Plugins folder (keep your actual Plugins folder somewhere safe) which uses only the essential plugin files and then slowly reintroduce the rest of the files and see if there's any change in performance. Bear in mind that you won't be able to use your other regions until you reinstate your original Plugins folder.

If you add your system specifications, and the first 20 lines of one of your crash dumps from the exception reports folder, we will be able to better help you.

You might also show us what is on the target line of your shortcut that starts the game. There are a lot of options that may help you.

Certain combinations of older or slower graphics cards and their drivers seem to cause this problem. This used to happen to me, but it stopped when I got a new, faster graphics card

@Z1: My PC is fairly new with an HD7000 card so I would hope that it would be more than capable of running a game as old as SC4. I agree, though, that it could be a driver issue but it only seems to affect SC4. What card did you upgrade to?

When you zoom in and out, do you use the number keys on your keyboard or the mouse wheel? The mouse can send quite a bit of commands to the program at once and crash it, even on a newer PC (I'm running with an ATI 6870 1GB GPU)

My current video card is an ATI HD4870. Although the HD7000 line is the latest and greatest from ATI, there's a wide range of performance across the line; I would expect the low-numbered cards in this series to underperform the 4870 by a fair amount. And as Yoshiisland points out, using the mouse wheel to zoom in and out can overwhelm just about any graphics card. Either the number keys or the plus and minus keys are much safer.

Sorry to butt in here, but the AMD 7000 series hasn't been released yet.

Don't bet on that. AMD has been acquiring cards and chip sets from Hynix Electronics (Hyundai). You never can tell what will turn up in a OEM box.

@Yoshiisland & Z1: I do use the mousewheel a fair amount so I think you are both onto something... I'll have to experiment with the alternate zoom to see if that makes a difference. Thanks guys.

:uhm: My bad but it seems I was slightly incorrect regarding the graphics card - its actually a 5750! Not sure why I thought it was the 7000 but its still a good card as far as I know.

    You mean this?

    Exactly. See the analysis above.

You are missing the EP1 update for your geographical sales region and the update4BAT which will bring your game into condition to use all the custom content found on the STEX. You can get these updates from SC4Devotion. Just move to the bottom of the left hand frame and choose the EA support button and follow the links. Be sure you get the relevant EP1 update which depends on your Stock Keeping Unit (SKU) number. You can find this number in the program files/maxis/simcity 4 folder by finding the folder/file SKU.

You will still crash, but not so often. You have encountered an unfixable bug in the executable text that we are not allowed to touch. It is very likely an off-by-one problem caused by insufficient QA in the rush to market.

When I was running this game on XP, I hardly ever had a crash after I got the updates. Applying the updates will reset your graphics parameters to default, so you will need to fix that after you have applied them. And set your maximum and minimum paging file on XP to 4095, tell windows to not manage it and boot your machine after you've backed out of the settings.

The devastating effects of a crash can be ameliorated by using the in-game save command (CTRL+s) regularly when you have done something you don't want to do over. Also, if you are working with NAM puzzle pieces, you will crash if your cursor is loaded with one and you touch a transit enabled tile, including roads, etc. With puzzle pieces I work at highest magnification and save very often as I construct something.

You may have to artificially construct the default set up for program files/maxis/SimCity 4 and Documents/SimCity 4 if you don't have it so that the patches can be made. After the patches are in, move the entire program files/Maxis/SimCity 4 folder and the initialization file to wherever you want them. Moving stuff around after installation is fraught with keeping this up forever. Many of the custom installation executables for the downloaded stex files will not be able to find your installation.

The installation folder is kept in the Windows registry, so there should be no problem installing the updates. I also use a nonstandard installation directory, and have no problems with it.

    What is zero-pointer bug?

A zero pointer bug is when a memory location or (as in this case) a register which is supposed to contain the address of a location instead contains zero, which is never the address of an actual location. When the program tries to access that nonexistent location zero, it crashes. This is why you get "Exception code: 0xC0000005 (-1073741819) ACCESS_VIOLATION." And as Moose is fond of pointing out (no pun intended), it's essentially the result of a programming error.

    leaderfrontier...

It would appear that you are using SimCity 4, not SimCity 4 Deluxe/Rush Hour.

If you have downloaded plugins that are meant for the Deluxe/Rush Hour version, which most plugins are designed for, your game will most definitely crash. 28.gif

The only way to solve THIS problem would be to purchase a version of SimCity 4 Deluxe/Rush Hour.

It can be had from EA via Origin Games here, for US$9.99. (A current Promo.) It is also available at Steam and Direct2Drive for US$20.00

I know the Steam and Origin versions come 'updated' to version 1.1.641. (Which means you would NOT need the updates that A Nonny Moose suggested... also, I don't think the updates will work with your version of the game.. I'm sure someone will correct ot support this!)

    Hope this helps! 44.gif

It is not the same crash. I expect it is due to the fact that you have not updated your game. I've never seen this one before but it indicates that the program has tried to execute a command that requires being in the kernel mode which is reserved for the operating system only. This violation is a serious bug in the code.

After your update to level 638, if you want to use any custom content that includes night time lighting you also need to add the update4BAT. Both of these are executable files and will put you at level 640.
