"From today plastic bags will be made available on trains to be handed out to passengers in case of extreme emergencies," NS spokesman Eric Trinthamer told AFP, saying "it included when trains were stranded."

I presume that this is because when the NS ordered new commuter-trains, someone at the top of the company thought: "it's a commuter-train. No one travels a long distance with these trains so we probably won't need any toilets..." But yeah, they didn't think of emergency situations...

To me it's old news, but still it's a fail...

It's a good idea if you REALLY need to go but I think it's a last resort because I can't imagine it being to pleasent to be going pee-pee in a back room.

Years ago, I was on a train in Switzerland. It went through some lovely scenic countryside, well, mountain side, as well as some residential areas. At points it seems to drive through people's front yards.

The toilet was an open hole that went straight down onto the tracks. That struck me as very odd, especially since Switzerland is a very pretty, clean place.

in UK railways - most newer trains have toilets for long distance and non stopping services but not on Metros and comumutter lines where there alot stations close each other

I live in the Netherlands, and the whole country except the NS itself is laughing at it. You even have to ask the machinist for a pee-bag and pee in the cockpit standing just behind him!

I'm glad I almost never take the train.

e. I say this with complete bias because BART does not have bathrooms either and the station facilites are usually closed (for repairs - gee, I wonder why).

So then bums just pee in some corner. You can't win. I was in Denver and on their impeccably clean and modern light rail system, I detected the foul odor of stale piss emanating from the pedestrian overpass.
