Is there any way I can get the desktop crashes to stop?

Apparently, I installed something yesterday or the day before that really screwed up my game. It almost never crashed me before (just once), but the last time I played, I ended up seeing my desktop against my will three times in about two hours.

I have 2 GBs of plugins, and no idea which one's causing the problem.

Is there anything I can do about this?

Look at the dates of installation of your plugins and take out the last couple of days to a different folder. Try your game, and if it doesn't crash anymore, it is at least one of the new ones. You now get the privilege of putting them back one by one until you find the offender(s).

You can live with this if you use the in-game save about every 10 or 15 minutes, and especially after you've done something you don't want to do over. Using CTRL+s may be a nuisance, but it is better than losing an hour of development. The save seems to reset the problem.

OK. Thanks. I might be too lazy to find the plugin causing it - especially since that would require starting and quitting the game tens of times - but I'll at least save more often and probably clear out all my plugins and start from scratch once the city I'm building for my CJ's done.

While there may be a suspect plugin the games stability does decrease as you gain more files, it is not the size that matters though, but the number. I used to have 6600 files and it would often crash hourly, sometimes several times an hour. I used the datpacker to compress a large amount of files, which has taken my total file count below 1500, since then I've had 2 crashes in 2 weeks.

    Well, whatever works.

I don't see why cutting down the number of files should make a difference. All plugins are reduced to a set of table entries as the game starts up, and whether they are packed or not should still produce the same number of entries. I suppose it could be some kind of buffer overflow problem that contaminates the game on start up, but it should be more common.

OK. I'll try it. Where do I find Datpacker? I think I used it once about 4 years ago, but I don't remember where I found it.

It's here https://www.sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=26, make sure you read the documentation because if you place the wrong files into a datpack the game will crash. Additionally if this crashing has just started recently it's more likely that its caused by a faulty plugin and dat packer won't stop that to my knowledge.

I used to have several crashes at random times, but I set my affinity (CPU count) to 1, and since then I've only had crash to desktop when I install a plugin wrong...

Most people don't crash at all, I suspect, or this forum would be hip deep in them. I crash because I am using the current beta version of wine and it doesn't much care for some of the things the program wants. I often get buffer overflow crashes on the frame buffer switching because wine will only give the game two frame buffers. Grrrr.

Actually, things have been improving, but with a world wide set of developers and trying to keep up with the Joneses over in Redmond, some things are on the back burner. I think if people run on the regular release of wine (1.2.1) they would be OK in general. I am just an O/S masochist.

I found the problem. It was Gamzdude's "Radicle RCI/Demand Graph Mod."

However, it leaves me with another problem...

How's a man supposed to build a city like this?

With the mod you just unistalled.

I have had since it came out and never had a single crash with it. Its probably not that mod causing the crash but rather another mod you had earlier, that when added to this mod causes the game to crash. You can only have 1 demand mod or related things at a time. If you have the Radical Ordinance or any other cheat lot that modifies dmemand you cant use it with this mod. You can only have 1 demand mod, any two of them (doesnt matter which) will crash the game.

OK. The only demand mod I remember having is CAM. I can check for others, though.
