Fresh Install...Oh What to Use?

The Story:

Long time SC player...running the same region on same machine since 2005. I grew sick of it, and the game, and deleted it all about 4 months ago.

Oh my short-sightedness!

Anyway...returning to the fold, and actually quite exited at the prospect of beginning fresh...my old region began as a vanilla region and I had to incorporate all of the STEX treasures over time. This time I want to set it up from the start.

However, as has always been the case with the "major" overhaul mods, I am daunted by the choices. So I thought I would hear from the community on the matter.

I will keep a running tally on what I'm installing, what I'm not using, and areas of the game I'm seeking a mod for.

Installing:

Latest NAM

Not Using:

Seeking:

Terrain Texture Mod (Something with snow? Never had snow)

Tree Mod

Water Mod

Menu organizing tool

An epic scale region with an asymmetrical city size layout.

and does anyone remember how to disable the launch video? :ohyes:

How about using the SPAM (simpeg agricultural mod) It makes your farms more realisitic and stops them from being unable to grow halfway through the game. Also for a water mod use simpegs Brigante which is a nice water mod.

For the modds/ maps you are seeking, just try a search on the STEX. We have a whole map category, and for the others, a few key words will bring up a lot of choices ;)

To skip the intro, you needto add " -intro:off" to the command line on you simcity shortcut. it should look like this: (dont forget the space)

"C:\Program Files\Maxis\SimCity 4 Deluxe\Apps\SimCity 4.exe" -intro:off

Edit: Ok I did a quick search for some of the more popular items you requested.

Water modd: https://www.simtropolis.com/forum/files/file/11836-peg-water-mod-brigantine/

Regions, any of these (you need SC4terraformer for all of them): https://www.simtropolis.com/forum/index.php?app=core&module=search&do=user_activity&search_app=downloads&mid=205022

Terrain (with snow): https://www.simtropolis.com/forum/files/file/13804-columbus-textures-for-jeronijs-mod/

Tree: For a region with snow may be try something like this: https://www.simtropolis.com/forum/files/file/20884-peg-mtp-god-mode-tree-mod/

;)

Oh Yeah...I love all things Peg!

    Brigantine Water is in!

    Trees are looking promising also!

Agro Mod...I'll look into it, not sure yet.

I'm really not looking more a region tool, as I tend to only need one good region. I'd prefer a region installed the "old fashion" way.

Sky Guy: On that Snow mod...I see it's an assembly of several mods...do you pick and choose or use all? Secondly...one lousy screen shot? Is there a CJ or something that can show me this mod in action?

Thanks on the intro shortcut...it was annoying me already.

    Installing:

    Latest NAM

    Peg's Brigantine Water

    Peg's Tree Mod

    Not Using:

SC4terraformer (and thus, regions that use it)

    Seeking:

Terrain Texture Mod (Something with snow? Never had snow)

    Menu organizing tool

An epic scale region with an asymmetrical city size layout.

Ok, so that was confusing me as well. You could try either of these (pick your favorite) They seem a bit more easy to understand, and everything is there (Just don't forget the two dependancies- they are the same for either one)

    https://www.sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=58

    https://www.sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=1527

Also keep in mind that snow will only be on high mountain peaks, but the textures etc, are outstanding ;)

Concerning a region go to the STEX, click "map" and then go to the very last page. All the maps this far back you can install the old fashioned way, just work your way forward until you find something you like.

And lastly, the only way I know how to reorganize your menus is to use the sc4tool and give each lot a new number pertaining to where you want it to be located. For the parks, there is a modd (on the LEX i think) that will send all maxis parks to the bottom of the menu. ;)

    All-

I'm in the same position as JediMarine, but just am playing Sim City 4 for the first time (an old SC2000 and SC3000 fan). I've found the BSC mega packs and SimGoober's mega packs are highly downloaded on other sites like SC4Devotion and BSC Exchange. Any opinions on those??

    Thanks,

Most items with the term "Mega" in the name are prop packs. They contain things that are used in making other lots. There is usually nothing in them that can be used "in game." The reason they are highly downloaded is due to the fact that the props in the packs are frequently used, thus making the packs necessary - know as dependencies. You would only need such packs if you use any content that requires them.

What might one download that would require those packs? Do you mean individual boats/buildings/etc...?

Yes, rather than looking for downloads that would use a prop pack, it would probably be more effective to download the items you like. Then get the required packs (dependencies). If you would really want to use things that require a certain prop pack, you could probably search for the creator that is sometimes named in the prop pack name. For example, in the BSC_MegaProp_SG_Vol1 name, SG is SimGoober, so you would look for items made by him. This does not mean that his lots would only require that particular pack, but it would be a start.

...or are there packages you can download with a host of buildings? For example, isn't PEG's MTP Super Pack all you need for mountain city building?? How about the CDKs?

There are very few packages of buildings and such that can be downloaded in a set. For some, this would create very large files that may not be desired by someone only wanting one or two items. Plus, not all buildings were necessarily created at the same time. The PEG MTP Super Pack you mentioned is a dependency for Peg's MTP series. It, by itself, would not give you all the items available. The MTP series is an example of a project that was developed over time, and there are numerous items available. The CDK is another example. Most things in it would need to be downloaded separately.

    Hope this helps...

Glad to help... Oh, and sorry for over-riding and changing your post. I goofed up and hit Edit rather than Reply.

If interested, you can read up on Dependencies by looking at this post.

Actually SimGoober has many "building packs" such as SG Commercials Lots Small Shops . There are packs of various types of residentials, industries and commercials and also of civic stuff like schools. One way for a newcomer to quickly acquire loads of high quality custom buildings would be to install these SimGoober packs (and their dependencies).

    So I need a gravel/dirt road mod.

Years ago I tried one that simply replaced streets with dirt, but it looked terrible.

Doing searches now, SAM keeps appearing...is that the best option if you just want dirt roads?

My opinion only, but yes, I think SAM is the best option. It's easy to use, plus I like the different options. You're not limited to just one kind of dirt/gravel street.
