Changing config.bmp?

I made a SC4 region a few years ago, and while I still like it, I do not like the way the cfg.bmp is set up as there is only 1 large city, while the rest are either medium or small. Is there a way to change the region so I can have more large cities?

You can alter the config with a graphics program such as MS Paint. Making single red pixels will produce small cities, a 2x2 green pixel area will give medium, and a 4x4 blue area will give large. The 3 pixel patterns need to fit exactly and completely on the config.

Important note: Making changes to the config will demolish any development and eliminate any terrain on the altered cities. If this is a developed region you want to keep using, these changes should not be made.

I see. What I am try to do though is to change the cities, but while keeping the terrain in-tact (I do not mind losing my cities). Is there any way to do that either in-game or with an external program?

I think that you are out of luck... You will probably have to make a new region with a custom config, and then import select cities with terrain that you like, but for the most part you will have to re-terraform.

    Sorry about that :)

Edit: But you could make life a bit easier for yourself, and downlaod a region you like, or get SC4Terraformer. Terraformer is a program that lets you terraform whole regions at once ;)

    you can get it here:

    I think I used the SC4Terraformer.

It is possible to make a new config and keep the terrain using Terraformer, and since you used Terraformer to make the region, it should be a little easier if you have the original SC4M file. It's just a bit more complex if you don't.

It's been a while since I did this, so I hope this is correct. First make a backup of your region just in case. In the original region, alter your config the way you want it to appear. Also, you'll want to get rid of any city files that are in the original region folder. From there, you should be able to use Terraformer or Mapper to make a new region using the new config and original SC4M file.

Edit: See the post below for more detail...

I just tried loading the region into the Terraformer and I get an error that says: A problem has occured while reading the region. Maybe it is too large for your RAM

I have 4GB of RAM so I don't think it's that. Nevertheless I think I will make a new region. Thanks for the help anyways.

Okay, I tried to redo one of my existing regions that was made with Terraformer. Here's what I did...

    • Made a copy of the existing region (Flatland) and saved it to my desktop.
    • In the original Flatland region, I deleted all the files except the config.
    • Altered that config to a different arrangement.
    • Opened the new Flatland region in Terraformer.
    • Using the Import Image button under Global Tools, I imported the SC4M file from the original Flatland region (the one I saved to the desktop). This brought up the terrain image in Terraformer.
    • Then I used the Save function under File in the Terraformer menu bar.
    • That created the new Flatland region that opened with the new config arrangement in the game.

    Hope that makes sense...

As for the RAM error... I have seen that before, but I'm pretty sure it was due to me doing something wrong in the process.
