Simcity 4 will happily run on Windows 7. The only difference is that it is installed to the (x86) Program Files directory.

and even if you couldn't run it on windows 7 (which you can and I do it TOO!), no support for XP means just no more updates or technicall support which theoretically means you can still have XP and simcity4 on it without any problems. And windows 7 on a dual boot for work and internet browsing just to be safe. 16.gif

And your antivirus program would still be getting updates no matter what OS your on, so you can still be virus free.

The only thing it really means is that you will not be getting MS updates.

DON'T PANIC

All it means is that they are moving on because they don't see any point in updating such old software that is pretty solid now. You can stay on XP until you are ready to upgrade your hardware without any risk. You just won't get any bug fixes, if there are any left that haven't been swatted by now. It may also mean that some newer software packages won't run. This just means that if you need one of them that it is upgrade time.

If I was them, I'd stop support for Vista as well. The main vehicle by 2014 will be Windows 8 and they will be well away working on Windows 9.

Welcome to the club. Isn't it nice not to pay money to MS?

LOL, never did. ;) Although, if you buy a computer and you get Windows for free, I guess it isn't really free. :P

Yes, well right now, I'm running Mac OS X 10.6 and Windows XP (dual-boot). Windows 8 looks awful. OS X 10.7 looks awful. Why pay money to a corporation who makes the OS worse and worse? (also, reminded by this xkcd strip)

Really? I think OS X 10.7 is awesome. It isn't that much different than 10.6 though, the usage of the trackpad is much easier though. I have a macbook pro for school and a desktop with Win7 for Simcity 4 :P

I haven't seen Windows 8 though, but I'm happy with Windows 7 so I'm not going to upgrade. ;)

EDIT: By the way, looking at this video, it just reminds me of the OS for the iPhone but than for a pc, why installing that on a pc?

If you find the right vendor, you can save the price of the windows bundle. I did. Saved me $200 so I got some more memory. And you save the time and effort of getting rid of the bloatware.

Allright, noted. The next time I buy a pc I'll do that. If there is gonna be a next time though, I switched to Apple so I don't know whether I'm buying a new one in the future or not.

Well, if you are on Apple's latest O/S you might just as well be on UNIX, because it has that kind of kernel. There is probably not reason except cost to go any place else. If your machine is an x86 you can dual boot some version of Linux and compare the two.

I have a 64bit system (macbook pro). I got it with Snow Leopard (10.6) and I got a free update to 10.7. :)

I can install Linux on my desktop though, I have an empty partition so I see possibilities. ;)

By the way, does it really matter whether it is 64bit or x86? My desktop is also 64bit.

When you download to make your Live CD for Linux, you have to select the version that matches your hardware. Pick the 64-bit one. If you want a more windows-like decor, try UBUNTU. If you don't like the unity desktop you can switch to classic. The default desktop is more like windows 8.

I will try that. I am familiar with ubuntu but that was three years ago or something like that. I believe it is changed a lot since then.

^ That is the understatement of the year. The new version is due out at the end of October (11.10). I think the desktop designers have got the bit in their teeth, but that is maybe just me.

I don't care if they drop support for XP, once I have built my new computer it will dual-boot XP or 7 with Debian.

If you are using GRUB, you can have as many operating systems as you want. It just takes a little care. I am not sure you even need separate partitions.
