$%&^! needs help - NAM? Where to start ...

Greetings!

First-time post, so go easy on me. I have no clue if this is posted in the wrong place. If so, please guide me.

  1. What is NAM, and how do I get it?
I see several mods, most seem to be related to roads, but many of them say "Make sure you have the latest NAM something or other" and then it is a link. I click the link, and it is a broken link. So, if there some master-mod that I need to use something like this?

  2. Is there a master tutorial, or a video-tutorial guru?
I haven't played Sim City since Sim City 2000 and am slightly overwhelmed by the breadth and depth of this game. I've looked around for some tips, and some basics, and have found a few, but I'm sure this robust community can muster some resources instantly for me.

  3. I've seen some pretty incredible looking cities with like European style buildings.
Are there mods that change the way building styles look?

That's all for now.

Thanks, Guys!

p.s., did my title get censored? lol. I used the slang-word for beginner, "$%&^!" but spelled with zeros. Oops!

Hi, welcome to Simtropolis. To answer your first question, the NAM, or Network Addon Mod, is a mod for the game that adds a lot of new transportation methods to the game. Some of these are pedestrian mall tiles, which act like roads - except only for pedestrians, and GLR, or ground light rail. The NAM can also change the capacity of traffic your roads/streets/avenues can handle, allowing you to create bigger cities. The NAM is one of the "must-have" mods, as it really enhances the gameplay of SC4. It also is a dependency for a lot of other mods. You can download the NAM by searching for "NAM" on the STEX, just flip through the pages a little, you'll find it. (Sorry I couldn't post a link ST was being really slow) There isn't really a "master tutorial" but there is a topic on the Omnibus for beginners. (Sorry again - no link.) You can find it by clicking on the link for the Omnibus on the to right-hand corner of the screen. However, there are a lot of helpful videos on YouTube for SC4. One in particular is ErwinNegentigNo2, he has uploaded a lot of helpful tutorials. About your third question, I don't think there are any mods that completely change the style of buildings in the game, but there is a user on ST who makes a lot of great European style buildings. Search "Porkissimo" on the STEX, he has AMAZING BATs! There are also many good W2W, or Wall to Wall buildings on the STEX. These are found commonly in Europe. Search "wall to wall" on the STEX. Once again, I'm sorry I couldn't provide any links, while I was writing this ST went down again, so... It is often hard to find what you're looking for when searching on the STEX, so once ST is back up, I'll try and provide you with some links. Well, I hope this helped you. :D

Okay ST seems to be working again, so I'll provide some links for you:

1. NAM

2. Omnibus Topic

3. ErwinNegentigNo2

4. Porkissimo's STEX Uploads

5. Haarlemmergold's STEX (More Euro Style)

6. Aradras's STEX (European)

7. Molooo's STEX (Yet More Euro)

And you might want to try this mod, to get rid of the Maxis buildings you don't want: Block All Maxis Mod

Hope this helped! :thumb:

Welcome to Simtropolis...

Just a note...

...did my title get censored? lol. I used the slang-word for beginner, "$%&^!" but spelled with zeros. Oops!

Various forms of the word for "a person not experienced with the game" are automatically censored by the site's software due to the potential for their being used in a negative manner.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Regarding NAM...

What is NAM, and how do I get it?

I see several mods, most seem to be related to roads, but many of them say "Make sure you have the latest NAM something or other" and then it is a link. I click the link, and it is a broken link. So, if there some master-mod that I need to use something like this?

Since you say you're new to SC4, please take note that most downloaded content requires SC4 Deluxe (or Rush Hour) to work. In addition, you should also get the official game patches - NAM in particular requires the EP1 patch. See the Omnibus article in MamaLuigi's post above for information and links. Any questions concerning NAM or it's related items can be post in the threads of this subforum. Have fun...

@ TimeSpiral : You asked for a master tutorial; I agree with MamaLuigi945 about the Omnibus-section here on Simtropolis.

But if you want more I recently found one by a user named Thy451 that was made many years ago; version 1.1 & version 2

    Thanks, guys!

NOTICE: I just recently purchased the game via download from EA, so who knows if that has an effect on any of this.

    UPDATE

I downloaded EP1, and everything went smoothly, I guess, except that I received this error that it couldn't update one or several of the files. So, I went to double check the file sizes like it recommends, and none of them match. Fail?

Secondly, I downloaded the NAM, that was linked, and there is no install file. I have NO clue on how to install this thing. The readme say "to autoinstall double click the install file," which of course, does not exist in the unzipped directory.

Anyone have any experience with this? Thanks in advance!

Well, if I'm correct, I posted a link to the NAM download for Mac users. At the time, I don't think the version for Windows was working, as I couldn't find it on the NAM Team's file page. Sorry for the trouble, if that is the problem. I'll try to send you a link for the Windows version, once it is back.

Are you using Mac? The NAM linked by MamaLuigi945 is a Mac-version.. I think there is only a installer for the Pc-version of the NAM.. You have to copy all files except the readme & pictures into your plugins folder.

The Pc-version can be found here (registration to SC4Devotion required)

    Or here at ST.

Never mind. That's the Mac version...

Regarding the patch, make sure you downloaded the right SKU for your area.

I should add, all links to the NAM and its components can be found in the NAM Frequently Asked Questions and Download Links Thread, located on the Modding-Transit Networks board.

Might be because of all the problems ST seems to have lately; but the PC-version of NAM has diseappeared from the STEX! Even in that thread the link is broken

So it would seem. Have brought it to the attention of the admins...

What a wonderful community this is!

Thanks, everyone. I look forward to reading some of the links and hopefully getting NAM installed.

So I can just copy the contents of the download into the Plugins folder for my PC?

I also have a mac, but I purchased the PC version of the game because I could not find the Mac version anywhere. Ha.

When you unzip the PC version, it should have an installer inside, because there is a lot to install, and it would be a daunting task to copy the certain files you want into your plugins, as the NAM is customizable. You can choose which plugins and options fit what you want.

Being that you have the download version, the game comes patched to 1.1.641.0 and further patches are NOT needed. 44.gif

Man, I sure hope I can figure out how to get the latest Windows Version of NAM.

There is a link to the MAC one, but the link to the Windows version seems broken. ARG! Everywhere I read says that it is a critical mod.

It is available at the LEX at SimCity 4 Devotion--you'll need to register there to get to it--you can find it easily simply by clicking "Most Popular" once you get on the exchange--the NAM Windows version will be the first file you see.

It's also up on ModDB--just the Windows version of the NAM is there.

That's really bizarre that the Windows NAM went missing here . . . thanks for getting the Admins on it, CaptCity!

If you're using Windows, the operating system already has support for opening .zip files natively.
