Connecting cities with monorail network

Hey all!

I wish to build a vast monorail network that carries people all over the country.im a $%&^! at monorail. Please halp me!!!

the monorail netwprk is to connect the large cities to the small cities the building of these rails is subsidised by the mass transit capabilites

I did this with a couple of my cities, but recently I heard that they're expensive for your sims and only the wealthy will use it. so I've started the process of replacing them with elevated rails. Connected with bus-sub-el rail stations, this is fairly efficient...as far as I know.

They're expensive to build, but not to run.

Not true. Low and medium wealth Sims are quite happy to use the monorail. And the monorail is much faster than el rail (especially if you have the NAM); you'll get a lot of use out of it if you put in enough stations.

Nothing to it, really. Just make sure you don't create one of those deadly commuter loops, Keep an eye on your usage stats, and if you have more riders than population, it is time to start loop killing. The monorail structure must be factored into your transit tree such that looping back through two or three cities cannot occur.

What im thinking of doing is only making monorail 'spurs' to smaller cities while larger cities have large loops Im just talking out of my ass though. Somebody correct me.

There is an unfixable bug in the game that causes Sims to ride around if they can find a way to do it. They never go to work. If you set your network up in such a way that the Sims can transfer from one part of the net to another and come back, even across three or four cities, they will. It doesn't matter how many connections you have between cities, but make the structure a tree, not a loop. Beware of ferries.

The symptom of this is many more riders in a city than you have Sims.

Just as an addendum, the loop must span at least three cities for this to happen. A loop that spans just two cities will not produce eternal commuters.

Also, if you have attractive jobs along the route, you can often entice the Sims into getting out of the loop and going to work there. This works best if your city crossings are near the center of the tile.

I've found monorails are really only good for short-term travel - As in taking people from a residential area to your downtown. As a vast network, you'd be better off just looking into rail, or a high-speed rail. There is no way to make a monorail economically efficient enough to have it run through suburbs.

Unless you want to get in there an mod the mod, there is a speed limit on all network items. If you want quick inter-city transit without cars use monorail. Don't forget the parking garages at the pickup end, and buses at the destination end. I'd show you, but my system had a hiccup today and I lost my entire region. Had to start over, but I have some new ideas, anyway.

Monorail becomes a much more affordable option when you have heavy rail overloaded with freight and commuters. You can achieve the split with El-rail as well but if you are using a heavy rail line as a major commuter route across many tiles then pairing up the monorail makes more sense and removing the passenger stations from the heavy rail. I find El-Rail really good for the shorter commutes as well as on the branches feeding my main commuter veins.

God's don't mourn. They just sort the souls and move on. Most of those Sims were sent over the rainbow bridge into Valhalla. Only a few were left in the clutches of Hel.
