I'm using the real highway mod for the first time and have no clue what I'm doing. I have a large tile about half or three quarters full and wanted to start putting a highway in the city. My city is a pretty unrelenting grid right now, with the idea that I can start bulldozing and customizing as I go. I already have bus stops and a rail system throughout the city.

I figured I'd start by replacing on of my avenues with a highway and take it from there, but I have no clue how to get the highway to connect to the existing avenues. Attached is a screenshot.

You can turn a RHW-4 into a One-Way Road which then can go into an avenue, if that's what you're meaning to do. It won't be much of a highway until you make overpasses or underpasses, though. You may want to make a sunken highway with the hole digger lots, so that you can easily make overpasses in your urban area. That will involve many ramps and puzzle pieces, and you can make a great highway network. Be warned, though - building with RHW in a built-up urban environment is challenging because it uses a lot of space.

I suggest checking out Youtube and searching for "SimCity 4 RHW" or something like that. There are plenty of informative videos, some even from the creators of RHW. They will give you some good ideas to making a network.

There are a lot of tutorials how to best use the RHW over at sc4devotion.com, so you just might check out these.

Some informations on the RHW as a starter:

(*) Basically, the RHW will use up much more space in your city because of the fact that the RHW pieces do have a much more realistic scale than the Maxis Highway.

(*) Keep in mind the RHW will not be counted as "road access" for residential and commercial zones. So a res/com zone that is oriented towards a RHW network will show the "No raod access" sign and won't develop. Industrial zones will develop when oriented towards a RHW network. So, using the RHW amidst yur city is possible but take care of the road access for all these zones adjacent to the RHW.

(*) In advance of creating your first RHW intersection, be sure to save your city. Most likely you wont succeed in creating a proper RHW intersection with the first attemp. RHW puzzle pieces a re sometimes tricky to place. Personally I experienced a lot of destruction and rebuilding work when trying to build my first RHW ... It also might be a good idea to sketch the interstion you want to build on a piece of paper to get an idea of how it can work out. Don't get disapointed. The first intersection will be really hard work that sometimes makes you wann cry ... At least that's my experience ..

(*) as of now, means of crossing the RHW with other networks (like avenues, roads, ..) is limited to a certain extent (since the RHW still is work in progress). So it might be a good idea to investigate if all the crossings between RHW and other networks are possible before laying out the RHW. Otherwise you will have a beautyful RHW but might run into problems connecting the remaining networks across the RHW. This is especially important when using the RHW amidst your city.

(*) as a last hint, it's always useful to have a look at the "Show us your RHW" thread to see how other gamers accomplished their work. This will give you a lot of good ideas that you might include ito your work.

Other than a desire to use the RHW package, have you rejected using a NWM six-lane avenue? RHW is more for intercity travel, IMHO, rather than intracity streets. It produces a limited access highway with all that that implies.

There is a set of tutorial videos on this, but I seem to have lost my link. In both packages you have to take care to use the proper transitions to keep your paths recognizable by the simulator. If you have any doubts about the pathing, usie the command DrawPaths (extra cheats dll) to see how the program views your construction.

You can turn a RHW-4 into a One-Way Road which then can go into an avenue,

If there are 2 RHW-4s side by side you can simply make sure they are even and beside each other, then drag the avenue and connect it.
