Network Addon Mod - Virus?

Hi,

I downloaded the NAM version 29 from simtropolis, but when I virus scanned it like I do with anything I download, it said it found a virus called "Artemis!64B71CA7D3ED" in the .exe? However the antivirus has no information on that virus when I clicked more info. I downloaded it from a different website, and the same thing happened. I'm wondering if anyone else has seen this before, and what it is? I'm 99% sure there's not a virus in the NAM download, it has 717,000 downloads. I did download it before with no problems, about a year ago. But had to re-install sim city because of, yes, a virus :P I just want to be 100% extra safe, I do not need to buy another hard drive.

If the download both from here and SC4D are reported by your AV then it probably is a false-positive/dumb-AV, never heard of Artemis!64B71CA7D3ED, I know some old scanners might flag NSIS installers, it might be a good idea to do a full scan of your computer first.

Well the chances of a virus on the NAM are almost zero. Maybe your virus detector is sensitive and detecting the change the NAM brought to the game. I'm really not sure but if it's not harming you and you're really sure it was from the NAM and no other web surfing or such I would just ignore it.

I personally packaged the last NAM version up myself, and I can give you absolute assurance it is 100% virus-free. :) I have Norton Internet Security 2011, which I keep up-to-date and use to scan my computer frequently--I just scanned the NAM Version 29 archive itself and Norton says it's completely clean.

Additionally, as you pointed out, it does get downloaded quite frequently (on average, well over 500 times per day across multiple sites--about 2-3 times that in the days after a new update is released). We have folks coming to us about issues with transit path files within minutes after release--it wouldn't take long for our users to report if there was a legitimate virus in there.

Some anti-virus programs have detection heuristic that flags any sort of executable file that doesn't come from a major software company, and that is likely what is happening here. I would stay far, far away from the official EA SC4 Exchange, however--there are some legitimately virus-laced files on there.

    Hi all,

Thanks for the replies. I did run a scan of my PC, and it didn't find anything else. I went ahead and installed the NAM, and have had no problems with it so far. I also downloaded some of the NAM addons, SAM, RHW, etc. plus various other plugins and none of them showed up on the antivirus as having potential problems. It's just my antivirus being stupid probablly. Well now I just have to go and learn how to use all this new stuff... :P

I never usually go near the official EA exchanges, whether it's for SC4 or Sims or whatever, they always seem to have some nasty stuff in there :/

    Great site Btw!

I am using Panda Cloud Antivirus and nothing detected on me.

There is 0% of NAM getting a virus like that.

The chance of a virus in the NAM is about as likely as all Simtropolis members dying from a brain aneurysm, simultaneously, within the next ten seconds. Yes it is possible, but it really isn't going to happen.

I don't see where anybody responded on what Artemis is so I thought I would chime in. Artemis itself is not a virus. Artemis is part of McAfee that scans for suspicious code/functionality and often detects installs files as being "Possible" or "Generic" viruses. Most of the time, they are harmless things you actually want to do (such as the NAM install) but it can easily be something harmful so McAfee errors on the side of caution.

Note this is just my understanding based on my previous research into Artemis because it was coming up for a me a great deal too.
