I was going to post this in International Affairs, but this needs more discussion than it would get there.

We know the Chinese have slapped arbitrary controls on the Internet, and now Turkey seems to be following suit, but in what appears to be an attempt to place all content into categories, including one that is not mentioned in the article, namely the bit bucket. Since Turkey, a member of NATO, is a rather totalitarian state one wonders if this is the thin edge of the wedge. I would be willing to guess that social network sites will be blocked entirely. It would appear the mushroo0m management of the poplulace is happening there.

It's always a worry when any government or other group wants to limit the basic human right of Freedom of Expression.

A rather dire prediction, I think.

Only governments without a free press would dare. The information muzzlers are the ones with much to lose if free communication were available.

It seems surprising that Turkey, the country that is most likely to accede to the EU, is somewhat controlling their internet. They have become a shining example of Western/European co-existing with Eastern Islamic culture; it is a shame.

I think the Turks have had this in the works for some time. Implementation was probably triggered by events in the Islamic world. Since the end of WW II Turkey has always played it cool.

They have indeed played it cool, the only thing other than this internet problem that is shady is their 'conflict' with Greece over Cyprus. I don't think it will be a problem, look at our government in the UK and Ireland.

I hear the FCC is planning on using "Net Neutrality" to "give everyone affordable high speed internet" and control what people have access to. I hope that is just a rumor and not the truth.

"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

Based on what you have written, I am going to say that it is not true. First off, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) doesn't regulate the internet. The Federal Communication Commission (FCC) is the one concerned with that. As for controlling what we have access to, there is a certain level of incentive for the FCC to implement internet content controls, but at the same time, there is incentive for them not to do that.

In view of recent activities in the SCOTUS, I'd think the FCC would tread lightly, if at all. Anything that might infringe the first amendment will get a lot of people at FCC in more trouble than they want. Some of them might become candidates for a budget cut.

But the 'free' press is owned by the goverment, basically. a lot of the politicians own majior media corportations.

Saying it twice doesn't make it any more true. If the press barons are also in government, so what? As long as they are not the government.
