I think part of my problem with it is that to me, in order for something to be worthwhile, it has to involve making measurable progress. Collecting things, racking up some sort of score, achieving milestones... if, at the end of the day, I have done none of those three things, I feel like I have wasted my day. It's very difficult to find anything in skiing that fits into one of those categories, so I don't see where the fun is.

Of course, there is also the broader picture that, despite mostly growing up in the suburbs, my family very much comes from a working class inner city background.... and thus in many ways my perspective on things is more typical of someone from The Bronx (which I actually technically am, I was born there!) than someone from Fairfield County, Connecticut. I think skiing is stupid. I think boating is stupid. I think golf is stupid. I think stage theater is stupid. I drink beer, not wine. I prefer cheap things over fancy expensive things. I don't mind places that are dirty and unkempt. And so on.

I like golf and some forms of theatre, and I prefer my places somewhat clean, but don't really care too much.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

Duke, after reading your post about what you consider fun, going a few hours without thinking about it, and then finally forgetting most of it by this time, I've decidedhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KqhfLTsEeZg!! 3.gif

    @ JeeKTan, many of us!!

I like to ski but I have not skied for years and the best I could go on was a black or blue square (the one less difficult than black diamond). If I went skiing again for just a day, I would have to go on a circle.

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

    Words to live by:
"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

"Do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34
"Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you." Matthew 7:1-3

Last time I went skiing I could only go straight or turn left, and I forgot how to stop properly halfway through the day.

In other news, I just did two crossword puzzles.

I ski almost every year - my family (me included) takes a trip to Austria, and this season, we're going to a place called "Hochzeiger". I've tried everything from easy blue runs, to really difficult off-piste with lovely powder.

@Blue Lightning: It sounds weird that the rating system is relative - in the European countries are there some guidelines (actually, it's specific rules) that tells when a run is blue, red, etc.

I like crossword puzzles myself, astro. I don't have anything else to say about skiing.

951 - My trip has been pretty eventful. We broke down in Superior, WI and Tifton, GA. We are behind schedule by 4 hours. (we made up a lot of time between Superior and Tifton)

It just doesn't make sense to me. I know skiing is fun and all, but to rent skis and poles and buy a lift ticket? That's some scratch right there. Ice skating seems more economical.

My first thought was "Wait, What? They have ski slopes in Ohio? 47.gif".

Then I remembered that the southeastern part of the state is actually fairly hilly.
