Hi!

I've only just started playing Sim City 4 and have been following the guides on this site so far. Today I've been trying my hand at region play and its been going well, until now. I tried making a suburb with no big manors and such, so I've been using 1x1 zones. That worked, until I noticed that not a single High Wealth Sim will move in, although my demand and desirability, education and such are high. When I zone bigger, R-§§§ will move in. I don't want that though. Can anyone help me?

Big mansions can't grow on small zones like that. You unfortunately have to use larger zones.

R$$$ won't live in a small cottage or a house on a small lot.  As far as I am concerned it is a bug in the game.

If I'm not wrong 1 by 1 residential lots never grow into anything. You've got to have at least 1 by 2 or bigger lots for houses to grow.

Right. It's a little difficult to understand what exactly you want, since high-wealth residences essentially equals mansions, and you don't have any other option unless you house them in apartments. I don't think it's possible to get high wealth residences into smaller homes with maxis lots.

Since you want to build a suburb, you could try alternating your lots between mid-density and high-density. This will prevent lots from merging into each other and prevent aparments from growing. You'll then either get individual houses or row housing depending on demand. Note: they will only reach mid-wealth though. And this method will cost a lot.

Or, you could just leave a space between each lot. Mansions can't grow if the space is only 1 tile wide.

There are 1x1 residential lots in the game, but none that are stage 1 (what cities usually start out with). I can see you have grown some already. As for 1x1 high-wealth residential, you'd have to check the STEX for that. The smallest made by Maxis was (I think) 2x2.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

A bug? If I were rich, why would I want to live in some dinky little shack when I could go and buy a mansion? That's a realistic aspect to the game; rich people generally like to have larger, more luxurious houses.

1x1 residential lots are all at least stage 2, which start growing when the city's population is a few hundred.
