HDI is the "Human Development Index": a statistic used to rank countries by the level of it's "human development" based on "life expectancy" x "education" x "income"

The formula can be found on that link that Liszak gave.

Better use that calculator 2.gif

Oh and I think you have to use the highest value on the planet to calculate your own indexes. So you can't just calculate the HDI of your city unless you use some numbers to compare them to.

From my understanding of the index, and the mechanics of SC4...

First, the Life Expectancy Index. In the city, go to the Life Expectancy graph. If your life expectancy is below 85, subtract 25 and divide by 60. If your life expectancy is equal to or above 85, the value for this index is 1.

Second, the Education Index. This is harder to calculate, but I would guess go to the education graph, divide your education by 200 and you should have a decent estimate.

Third, the Income Index. Take the logarithm of your residential average income (to the nearest thousand should be fine), subtract the logarithm of 163, and divide this by the difference between the logarithm of 108,211 and the logarithm of 163. If your residential average income income is greater than 108,211, this index will be 1.

Finally, calculate the HDI by taking the cube root of the product of these. If all goes to plan, you should have a number less than 1.

Using this, I got a HDI of 0.922 for a city in my region, which places it 3rd, between Australia and New Zealand.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

There is a modd on sc4devotion.com it called Regional Data Viewer , you can look at the decrptions here.

After reading what astronelson said you may not need this. This is just some extra stuff I use in the game.

Thank you very much, Nelson, for this approximation. Too bad that the game doesn't provide all the data we need to calculate the HDI with the official formula. To keep things simple, the formula written by astronelson should look like this:

formula1.jpg
  • If LE = 85, the first term is equal to 1.
This formula can be simplified in a variety of ways without losing many precision, but there's no simplification making the calculation much more easier than this, as it will always involve the Income Index logarithm.

Thanks guys for your help 4.gif

Just wondering though... How would you convert simoleons to dollars? Has this been put into account?

I'd guess the amount stated on the "Residential Average Income" graph is in (something close to) dollars, rather than the much more expensive simoleon.

Considering the low amount of money you get for developing a city, I'd say that the Simoleon is equal to the 1930 U.S. dollar.  Those were the good old days when eggs were twelve cents a dozen, bread was a nickle a loaf, and so on.  Jobs were non-existent though, so finding the couple of dollars you needed to feed yourself for a week or so was a problem.  The economy of SimCity is as close to the Great Depression as you can get.
