Freeway signage of Schellingen, some basic setups...

Regular exit:

bewegwijzeringschelling.png

  • Announcement sign (800m)
  • Detailed exit sign (400m)
  • Detailed exit sign (0m)
  • "Exit"-sign
  • Distance panel

Portal signs (overhead signage)

bewegwijzeringschelling.png

Other signs:

bewegwijzeringschelling.png

  • Fork sign (announcement for complex interchanges)
  • Service sign (for destonations that are not important enough for regular signage, but still noteworthy, like railway stations, industrial area/harbour areas, landmarks and tourist attractions)

I also designed signage for my neighbouring country Steinmarken (on request of the owner of the country himself, who is not me). The destonations are from Schellingen. The style is a much improved version of the Austrian signage (for the record, I HATE Austrian direction signage, but this version looks quite decent).

Regular freeway exit signs:

Freeway Portal signs:

Other freeway signs signs:

fsm03.png

Non-freeway signs:

Well, that's it for now!

Best,

Maarten

    Hi mates!

Your work is amazing and very inspirational for me. I created some road signs for and upcoming CJ. I hope you like it and critics are very welcomed...

    - Two road signs. Both were located on region limits.

    00000.png

    00001.png

    - One road sign. It is located at district access.

    00002.png

    - One informative signal. Yo have te city names of the district and the distances. Also, yo can see the road shields (rural highway, main and secondary road)

    00003.png

I hope you like it! I will probably make some more and I will post in this topic so you can see my work as it progresses.

    See you soon!

PS: Sorry for my basic english. I'm from Argentina...

Wilkotdf: those signs are looking quite good at first glance :thumb: . Still, this set can be improved:

    • The shields have some text you can only read from up close, including. This should be prevented, or at least you add a prefix to the highway and interstate numbers, like "I-64" and "H-35". This will show drivers clearly on what road they are driving, even people who are color-blind (yes, this point is often forgotten).
    • The distance panel gives you no info on which road you're driving. Try this approach instead:

      nbaverbeterdeversies03.png

The route shields on top shows the routes your currently driving on (it's actually nicer if these shields were centered) and the shields under the line are crossing routes.

    Best,

    Maarten

Wilkotdf: Very nice sign set so far! My only critic would have to be that the two shields (Interstate and Rural Highway) are of the same shape, only different color. Try using different shapes to differentiate them. As for the text, it really isn't all that important, so you could keep it or get rid of it, either way its not going to be much of an issue.

And I suppose I should show my latest (aka, last week's) signsets...

Those are some pretty interesting signs, BlueLightning. Can I ask what 'TaPH' stands for?

Great signs everyone else, even if I don't understand a word of what yours say mrtnrln, lol

^^ That's because that particular sign is a distance panel quite near the dutch borders. Köln is located in Germany and Brussel (Brussels) and Liège are both located in Belgium.

I think TaPH stands for "Tyca Per Hour" a fictional speed unit.

Let me quote this from Vince's CJ:

    (note: 1 tyca > 1 mile, but 1 TaPH < 1 MPH

Indeed, TaPH stands for Tycae (plural) Per Hour.

1 TaPH = 2.605 (IIRC) MPH (values are rounded to the nearest 5 on speed limit signs)

    Yet 1 Ta != 2.605 mi :P

(my units don't make sense, I don't know what I was thinking when I decided to split the unit)

I don't know what to put here anymore.

Those are some very neat signs. I can't wait to see more!

Here are more pics of a VMS sign I'm working on. I just completed an elevated highway version of it. I'm just refining a few things before sharing it on the stex

Eh, flip that around... 1 MPH = 2.605 TaPH :P (So roughly 65 MPH)

so that means 170 TaPH = 65 mph,

but 170 Tyca = roughly 443 miles? :boggle:

    (considering 1 taph< 1mph, but 1 tyca > 1 mile)

[ if i got that right, everyone should switch their CJ's over to "tyca" as their distance measurements  ]

by the way, where is everyone getting the " little arrow symbols" on their signs, i want to make my own signs ! :thumb:

There are a two ways to get those symbol:

    - Downloading the Roadgeek 2005 fonts. This font set includes common signfonts, symbols and arrows.

    - Using svg-templates from wikimedia commons, which you can open with InkScape (available on inkscape.org). This link is very usefull: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Diagrams_of_road_signs_by_country

There's one thing I've been noticing with your signs. It seems that you have been using paint because I can tell by the shape of the borders (like the one for exit 3 in the last sign, the top looks squished while the bottom is good). Also, the arrows are too big (unless you're purposely making them that way). I suggest using a vector graphics program, they come out a lot nicer (I compared Paint and Illustrator in one of my earlier posts) and are easier to work with as you can always make corrections without having to redo the whole sign.

I suggest inkscape since its free. I use Illustrator to make my signs however since I'm used to it, but I've used Inkscape once (on a Windows machine since I use Mac and do all my signs on it), and it seems to get the job done with little effort.

Anyways, good signs and keep it up 44.gif

PS: Also, it's Phoenix, not Pheonix

    Hope this helps!

I can also tell the difference between vector images and paint. I've tried to recreate NTM's signs with InkScape (sorry, I didn't have the right fonts available on the PC I created them):

    ntm01.png

With some adjustments, here's how I would do it:

    ntm01a.png

Comparing the two versions, mine uses less surface area and is therefore cheaper, but without cropping everything up.

    Best,

    Maarten

EDIT: Just for the fun, I created a Danish variant of NTM's signs :P

I have one question: What font did you use for the first one(Not the Danish one). Anyways, thanks for the advise guys!

EDIT: Found a typo on one of the signs I din't notice before:On the "Exit 3" sign, the highway is actually 73, and leave out the "Central"

For the first two series I used Franklin Gothic Medium (and sometimes its Condensed variant), one of Windows' standard fonts. However, I would personally prefer DIN1451 or Highway Gothic E (In Roadgeek 2005 fonts these are called Mitteschrift/Engschrift and Series E) above all Windows fonts.

Per your advise, I decided to change my sign system a little bit.

Here is what I have changed from V1:

    • Use a darker blue and yellow
    • Changed font to Transport Heavy(Originally Light)
    • Removed the curved corners, as those cause me some trouble
    • I'll use Roadgeek arrows instead of the ones mrtlrlrn made me over a year ago.
    • The black box is where the exit number will go on signs(I know it's small, but on actual signs I will make it bigger).
