If I build two different cities in the same region that are right next to eachother, will sims have the option to commute from city to city?

Just a not, though. Commute times may be incredibly high so make sure there's not much congestion if you're using roads, avenues, etc.

Ok thanks. Another question... I'm trying to build a successful region. My main city has all different RCI zones. If my industrial zone is on the northwest side of the map which is all high tech, will a dirty industrial zone in the neighboring city lower land values for the main city?

No "area effects" such as pollution, radiation, etc carry across region boundaries

Would someone be able to give me an advice on my car park below? I too have a region with two towns and I have workers successfully commuting by train. However, they do not use the car park I have provided for them adjacent to the train station. Instead they drive directly to the station and overfill the capacity of the spaces there (capacity of car spaces is 2000 for the train station and 4590 commuters drive there. The car park would be able to take on all these cars as it has a capacity of 5000 but only 2 citizens drive there.

My problem is that the service quality of the train station is very bad because it is overfilled and the car park is empty despite it is walking distace from the train station.

the train station has a car park so the seperate car park doesn't change it because even if the people went to the car park then they would still all walk to the small distance to the train station. The only solution is to build second train station

The parking garage is only useful in cases where the "car to X" transit transfer isn't built in. The Maxis train station as mentioned already has the "car to train" transfer built in. M onorail stations for example don' t so it can be useful there. It CAN encourage car drivers to switch to other transport types if you have a LOT of traffic going by AND other transport available..  For example a busstop has no "car to bus" ability. If you put a strategic garage/parking lot beside a busy road with bus immediately available, many drivers will switch to bus. This used to be especially useful when buses got a "pass" from congestion, but now the NAM simulator just makes buses another car so it is less useful. But that should give you ideas of the concept

Hey lads, thanks a lot. Your help is very appreciated. So the capacity of the train station is total, not just the capacity of cars going there ?

I have razed the car park now and I have built a 2nd station just beside the 1st. That does actually not look too bad and some drivers coming from the north even use the southern station so all commuters split up evenly between the two stations.

The next bottleneck is the road coming from the north, especially the traffic juction. I guess I'll save a few funds and then extend the rail line a bit to the north for another station. My original plan was only one station in my town and one station in the neighbour town so the trains can go non-stop and with only two 45 degree bends for a high speed connection. I had bought a strategy book and it said that the fewer stations and the fewer bends a track has, the faster the trains will go.

Anyway, thanks again for your help. I did not know what the car park was for so I thought it will increase the overall capacity of buildings like train stations.

Maxis Highways are another way to Maximise Inter-City Commutes. Will EDIT with a Picture in the Next 10 minutes.

    EDIT:

Just Some Proof that Maxis Highways aren't that bad!

If you have sims "commuting in circles" it is a result of your poor traffic network design along with the "stupid sims".. You might want to take a search for "commuter circles" or "eternal commuter" to get some guidance. The issue has been discussed quite a few times and at length.

Its taken a while... I came up with it in a Maths lesson during Geometry.

Not to go to Off Topic here but I will post a Satilite Image to show how City Build up improves with Connections.

As you can see... It still needs a bit of work.

The circular Highway is to Improve access to the city. If there was a regional Congestion view it would show the Inner Highways get lots of traffic!
