Cannot install Rush Hour

I recently decided to get back into SimCity 4 but I cannot get it installed on my current computer.  Vanilla SC4 installs and runs fine (minus some graphical glitches), but I can't install Rush Hour.  I get to sound.dat at the very end of the installation and I get the error "Unable to locate required file or required file is corrupted" and the installation aborts, leaving me unable to play even vanilla SC4, which it claims is no longer installed (and numerous files are missing).  I don't have any idea what the problem is and I can't find any information on it.

System stats:

-Windows 7 Professional 32-bit

-Intel Core2Duo 2.4 GHz

-3 GB RAM

-ATI Mobility FireGL V5700 with 512 MB memory

-147 GB hard drive (94.7 GB free)

-3188 MB page file

Try cleaning off the disc. Also it may be a Windows 7 thing. The game was originally intended for XP.

Yep sounds like you have a CD read problem... the disk is either dirty or damaged. Since it reads the disk 1 I assume your drive is ok. If you google "clean CD" you will find some techniques for cleaning or even polishing out your CD.. that will usually recover the process depending on how bady it is damaged or dirtied.

I rubbed the disc with a cloth and even changed my sandbox settings to allow full access to the disc drive; still get the error. I'm gonna try installing it on my desktop (where it's known to work) and copying the files over to my laptop.

EDIT: I tried it and now I get the error "Could not find required DLL D:\\AutorunGUI.dll" when trying to run the installer.  Looks like Rush Hour needs full access to the disc due to DRM conflicts with sandboxie.

EDIT2: This works, but I cannot figure out any way to install the BAT update.  Guess I'll have to go without it (I get "error renaming file" on 7 and a generic crash on XP).

When was the last time you did a health check on your computer.  It almost sounds like you may have a virus or maybe just a corrupted system file.  Also, do a defragmentation pass on your hard drive, and a chkdsk (off-line during boot).

You want to verify system health before you try again.  There is no reason for the BAT update not to run, but remember to tell W7 it is a 32-bit program, and is happier in XP.

Just a thought... If you mean the BAT update for allowing night-lights, after installing Rush Hour, did you get the EP1 Update. The BAT update may require that first.

Yep, I means the night-lights BAT update. I should have the EP1 update - the SC4 website said it installed correctly, and mods from here work fine.

You can always make proof-positive.. go to the INSTALL directory (Program Files area), right click the .exe, "properties", pick the "version" tab and read what it says. That version number will tell you the exact state of your install without ambiguity.

I have 1.1.638.0. It's in the "details" tab on Windows 7.

OK that indeed indicates you have all updates except the "nightlights" update as it's commonly called (also I think called the Bat4Max patch by some).. you will be at 640 if you apply that one
