Eurovision Songfestival

Dear people,

I made this topic because I could not find any look a like topics and I love the music in this event. It's a European event that has already reached it 50th year and contains a festival where countries compete to each other with music, some good, some very bad. The one who win will start the event in there capital the next year and get an award. Basically just X-factor/Idols and all that other crappy shows in a nice very large 3 evening filling shows.

What do you think of this show? The music this year and so on, talk9.gif

I think Eurovision has gone downhill during this years, more or less since the mid-2000's. Nobody seems to care very much about the contest in Western Europe because of the block-voting the Eastern countries do. IMO, nowadays seems the music and the songs are the less important thing on Eurovision.

For example, I can't even remember my own country's song but I really enjoyed the presentation videos for every country; I have even watched them on YouTube more than once...

But anyways, we have a familiar tradition which consists on watching the contest having a pizza and then, learning a little bit about geopolitics. I'll be there one more year!

Year after year, Eurovision worse. I do not know if this is the case in other countries, but the previous French teams were not great. I'm French and I find their performances worse and worse. Something that changes the ordinary is really good. After that, though my country does, it will neither France nor any other Western country: TekindusT explained very well why.

And it's a contest that put so much directed my musical tastes that I do not even know when is it going to unfold.

Sorry for my bad English.

Maybe it is a truism of man that the older one gets the more he detests the current trend in music.

Ah the Netherlands again didnt get into the finals. Oh well, what do you expect with such terrible crap.

We are all complaining that those East block countries are forming a block when it comes to voting. I think its just a pathetic excuse for the fact that most western countries these days just make terrible music.

But my two favourites didnt go through. I really loved the Lithuania song.  And the Slovenia thing was fun as well.

The 55th Eurovision was won by Lena from Germany with a song called Satalite, although

I'm crazy for your love, would seem to be a better song title. Watched by 120,000,000 people worldwide, and that dance must have included many thousands.

To be honest, i'm kind of glad the other countries have taken Eurovision less seriously (i mean, hell, here in the UK, i don't think we EVER took it seriously!). I thought last night was hilarious, the Family, and i just watched Eurovision, making remarks, and choking ourselves laughing! I wasn't really bothered who would win, to me, at least Eurovision is just about sitting in your living room, with your family, and having a laugh. The music is godawful though, but, at least it's so bad, it's funny!

Still, i miss Terry Wogan on Eurovision, thought he was hilarious, when he'd had a bit too-much whiskey

If only they could sort out the voting system, it's been under more or less contant ajustment since the contest started, but there is too much of a political/cultural aspect to where a country's votes will go.

I think it's remarkable a "Big Four" country like Germany has won this year; the first time a Big Four country wins the contest in the 21st century (the last one was in 1997 by the UK). I was wondering if the economical crisis has made that none of the Eastern countries wanted to organise (and to pay) the 2011 contest...

Since last year the Eurovision Song Contest really is back on track. Voting is now much better as it's 50% by the juries and 50% by the people. Many western countries complained about bad results, but if they send in crap then what do you expect? Anyway, Norway won last year and the 2010 contest was won by Germany yesterday so it proves that block voting can't change the results as long as you send a good song.

Best example is Belgium. They had never passed the semi-finals (when they were added in 2004) because their songs were crap. This year, they sent in a good song, WON their semi-final and came 6th in the final. Good song = Good results 4.gif

Sad Sweden didn't make it though 15.gif I also expected Iceland and Israel to do better, but I'm happy with all songs in the top 10 (except for Denmark, damn that guy is ugly 43.gif)...

I already know Germany has won, but I'm still watching it - SBS has only just finished Bosnia and Herzegovina.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

I really liked France this year, to whomever saying they were bad.

I like to watch Eurovision too, if you just overlook the words "song contest" you can enjoy it for what it is, entertainment. It's not about having the most beautiful voice or the best song, the show, outfit etc. is just as important. I was with some girlfriends of mine, and we had made a paper for grading everything - voice, melody/tune, outfit, looks, how charming the contestant is, and so on. That's a fun way to watch Eurovision.

The flash mob dance was great, btw! 9.gif

Im glad Israel failed so hard. That guy sounded so freaking false.

Yeah Im glad Germany won, the girl deserved it and it was simply a really good song. I was disappointed that Lithuania didnt make it to the finals though. I really liked that song.

And hilarious that Serbia ended up pretty high XD

Just goes to show how different opinions can vary so much. I picked Germany as soon as I herd it, but also expected Denmark and Greece to do well. I'm surprised that the UK entry written by Stock/Waterman did so badly though, considering how many world-wide hits they have been involved with. I think the performance was a bit lame and was better in the run-up programs in which the entry was picked. I just couldn't see why Azerbaijan was the favourite before the contest started.

I really didnt like Germany, their entry was among my bottom 3, along with Ireland and Russia. Her voice was way too sharp, and, well, I just didn't like it, at all. Can't see why everyone loves it so much. There's nothing special or unique about that song in any way, like the winner last year.

I would like to propose that the name of this thread be changed to "The Eurovision Song Contest" Since that is whath it is called. And it actually is in its 55th year.

I thought it was enjoyable this year, much better that last year, and the 50/50 public/jury vote eemed to work well. I thought the voting from the start bit as a silly idea, though. It just allowed countries to vote for their neighbours more easily.

Germany was a deserving winner, in my opinion. I loved the interval act; very creative!

Disappointed Ireland didn't do any better than third-last though 3.gif. But I can understand that she just wasn't up to the standard.

Well, SBS has finished the songs. I shall await the results of their poll - the result may be quite different to that of Europe.

It did suprise me how many songs were in English.

There was some political voting this year, but not nearly as much as before, i think we're back on track again really.

Oh and yeah, did you see the interval act after the performances and counting begun? God that was awesome, here's a link!

By the way; for those of you who don't know, this year it was hosted in Oslo, Norway since we won in 2009.
