Can SC4 use multiple CPU cores and any benefit to installing on an SSD?

 Hello,

I'm trying to get SC4 to run as best as possible and I noticed that while playing it only uses around 25% of my CPU. I have an i7 920 with 4 cores and wondered if there's a way to get it to use all 4 cores?

Also, does anyone here have SC4 installed on an SSD instead of a traditional hard drive and is there a noticeable difference? I currently have my Windows, Office & Photoshop etc installed on my SSD, which work great wondered if it was worth reinstalling SC4 on there too.

Thanks!

Welcome to Simtropolis

The game will not fully use muilti core cpus,it runs on a single core only.

I don't know anything about SSD HDD drives.I would think it would run

about the same as a standard drive.

BIWDC is right about the cpu cores as SC4 was made back when cpu's on computers only had 1 core back then.

For the SSD, it will run faster, but probably not that noticeable, you will probably notice it more with ALOT of mods installed, it will just generally load faster, but it also depends on the SSD or even HDD like the interface being SATA II or SATA 3 (there is like 1 for SATA 3 SSD as of now(FINALLY)) and for 10,000 RPM or 7200 RPM (for HDD only, it would be funny if an SSD would have internal moving parts) and so on.

And BIWDC, get your terminology right, there is no such thing as an SSD HDD. SSD stands for Solid State Drive and HDD stands for Hard Disk Drive. Sorry, i just get reeeeeeaaaaaaallllllllly technical about this stuff.

Also something that was not in the question and is a little off topic but with windows vista and 7, SC4 runs ALOT better than XP when you have the 64 bit version and alot of ram. That was the biggest performance increase i have ever seen with that game.

I would install SC4 on my SSD to try it out but it only has 1.5 gigs of free space and the amount of mods i have is total to 5.7 gigs.

Sorry if i went on too much.

I have run the game on Intel Core2duo, and Core2Quad, the game uses all cores.  The total of each cores percentage used is more than 100%.

Thanks for your indepth reply...appreciate it! I currently have SC4 installed on my WD Caviar Black 1TB HDD, which is fast, but of course not as fast as my SSD. I've got an Intel X25-m Gen 2 SSD (SATA II) (80GB with about 40GB free, so I've got plenty of space to install it.

Recently rebuilt my system using Windows 7 64bit, an i7 920 overclocked to 4.2GHz and I have 6GB of RAM, so the game runs fine as it is, but I always want more!

I do have a lot of mods and I seem to be adding new ones all the time, so I am going to switch it to my SSD and see what difference it makes. I guess as long as I keep everything in the My Documents folder then I'll be able to pick up in the game from where I left off....hopefully!

I can see myself playing this game for a very long time to come, so I want to get the best performance out of it as I can!4.gif

Necro post I know and am very sorry but this thread was the Top Result Google spewed out when asking the question regarding installing SC4 on an SSD.

The only benefit to installing SC4 on an SSD really is faster load times when you have a huge Plugins folder and nothing more. Kinda disappointing I know but if you have several Gigs of Custom Content and mods faster load times is indeed a Godsend.
