Rant away!  I agree that something has to be done about rampant multinationals before they become our rulers.

We now enter the realm of (science) fiction.  Some outfit has devised a method to cap this well by setting down a large and heavy concrete and stell cap on it.  Probably designed by Rube Goldberg and Company and being deployed by a Halliburton subsidiary for some exhorbitant reward.

When you opened Pandora's Box, remember that you only wanted to see what was inside.l

Well, unprecedented problems tend to require unprecedented solutions.

Of course everyone is getting creative in trying to come up with a way of dealing with this. We can't just do something we've done before as the situation is unique.

To clarify, the gadget is cylindrical and designed to grab the oil and pass it through a "soda straw" to a barge.  Elegant.  And has the advantage of capturing the oil.  News report said it would take a least two months to put this in place which would be quicker than drilling a relief well.

Meahwhile, two more months of oil will continue to gush forth into the gulf.

    Capping Attempt Fails:

Breaking News:  It didn't work.  Now on to plan C.  I am starting to feel sorry for BP.  No hard work goes unpunished.

Plan D:  Take months and months and try to sink a relief well, if possible.  It will probably take the entire debt of Greece.

The latest thing seems to be Obama upbraiding the three bears for all the finger pointing.  Maybe we can construct some doggerel using the names: BP (British Petroeum), Transocean, and Halliburton similar to that old song about the guys at Watergate.  I seem to remember a song that had a line " ..., Mitchell, and Dean ...".  C'mon poets and lyricists.  You can use any public domain melody you like, including stuff like the final scene of Gotterdamerung.

Some  Russians suggested using a small nuke to seal the leak.  It seems they might have tried it a couple of times.  Lost my link to this story.

Well, its either the greater evil for the greatest number or the least evil for the greatest number.  The Russians are a little more bloody minded than we are, I think.

Didn't someone develop a bacterium that would eat the oil and disperse the metabolites?  Were these toxic in some way?  What happened to this project?

I think they already dispersed some of that, problem is there is just more and more oil being added. So the efectiveness is probabaly limited till they get the source cut off.

Yes, I am afraid that the industry was not prepared for something of this magnitude.  Now tons of money will be spent on cleaning this up and on further preventative measures which will properly raise the price of petroleum, exacerbating the inflationary pressure on everybody, but particularly in the G8.  I can see general austerity being required to pay for this.

I had a friend that wanted oil rigs or refineries to stop working so the price of gasoline would go up to teach the SUV drivers a lesson.

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

    Words to live by:
"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

I hope you talked him out of it, or where would his next bottle of water come from?

Our tap water is very high quality. I am almost certain that the Cedar River Watershed is the best source of tap water in the US. I do not see him anymore because I am now in college. I personally hope that gasoline went back to $2/gal because it is very expensive to drive a jeep.

    quote>

wow.  Haven't thought about that one in ages.

and the lyrics for those of you who can't stand the music

We're Haldeman, Ehrlichman, Mitchell and Dean.

The way we've been treated is really obscene.

To think that a bug worth hardly a shrug,

Could end up by getting us tossed in the jug.

We all got the gate for no reason or rhyme.

You'd think we'd committed some horrible crime.

Our minds may be dirty, but our hands are clean.

We're Haldeman, Ehrlichman, Mitchell and Dean.

We're Haldeman, Ehrlichman, Mitchell and Dean.

Our job was to see that the White House stayed green.

We might have had flaws, like bending the laws,

But God only knows it was for a good cause.

There's no power shortage where we were concerned.

And what little profit resulted, we earned.

Four lovlier fellows you never have seen,

Than Haldeman, Ehrlichman, Mitchell and Dean.

We're Haldeman, Ehrlichman, Mitchell and Dean.

Our past has been fat, but the future looks lean.

With backs to the wall, we're taking the fall,

But dammit, we only robbed Pete to pay Paul.

Just when we getting to be well-to-do,

The Watergate turned into our Waterloo.

And now everybody is out to demean,

Poor Haldeman, Ehrlichman, Mitchell and Dean.

Yes, we're Haldeman, Ehrlichman, Mitchell and Dean.

We're perfectly willing to spill every bean.

We've nothing to hide, with God on our side,

He knows we were only along for the ride.

But so it won't come as terrible blow,

There's one little thing that we think you should know.

Whatever we say isn't quite what we mean,

We're Haldeman, Ehrlichman, Mitchell and Dean.

Oh, yes, we're Haldeman, Ehrlichman, Mitchell and Dean.

Things won't be the same when we're gone from the scene.

But people will still recall with a thrill,

Our sell-out performance on Capitol Hill.

It just isn't fair to take all of the blame,

When all we were doing was playing the game.

Now all of Washington's caught in between,

Haldeman, Ehrlichman, Mitchell and Dean. quote>

We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: “I am talking with you in order to persuade you.” No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing.    - Pope Francis

Thanks, Meg.  I've never really seen the whole lyric.

Now there's no known cover up (yet),

But some poetic artist, I'll bet

    Will find a way

    To help save the day

While the oil magnates break out a sweat.

For plan F(or is it G now?) they'll probably start throwing money at it in hopes it stops the leak.

Btw, would it be wise to update the title of this thread to what is now happening as opposed to what originally happened?
