    http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2011/03/110310-gulf-oil-spill-air-pollution-science-nation/

I love when science achives something in this anti science trend.

This may need to be in the Global warming thread but i couldnt find it.

Might be better in the science stuff thread. It's an ill wind indeed that blows no good.

Demand for oil hasn't dried up (bad pun?), infact, oil prices are, in general, trending higher (current peak non withstanding). BP have the rights to the field, i assume, so they're going to drill it eventually. Nows probably as good a time as any.

For those who like irony...Transocean, operator of the BP Deepwater Horizon, infamous in 2010 as the worst oil spill in U.S. history, declared that 2010 was its all-time "best year in safety performance" and is shelling out large bonuses and salary hikes for its million-dollar executives.

Despite Gulf Oil spill, rig owner executives get big bonuses - CNN.com

Gee, after destroying the Gulf of Mexico and wiping out the economies and environment of the Gulf Coast region for generations to come, they pat themselves on the back and give themselves a $374,000 bonus and a $200,000 salary increase. I guess the same spin worked for the criminal banking industry, so why not the oil tycoons!

    Oily slicksters, indeed!

Maybe TEPCO executives will remind our Corrupted Class how seppuku is supposed to be performed.

Not totally sure how this is considered shocking. Even when the disaster was still ongoing with no end in sight, BP said that it would resume drilling in the oil field at some point in the future. The only thing they promised in that regard was that they would never reopen that particular well.

The bonuses are reprehensible. What should have happened to these people is that the buck should have stopped at their offices, and hierarchical exfoliation should have occurred. They have indeed reached the level of incompetence.

You want to see what is wrong with rampant corporatism? You've just seen a shining example. These idiots are culpable, even if some other outfit says they are not. You essentially have another Enron on your hands, and a full forensic audit is overdue.

Oh, I'll bet they have some great statistics proving that 2010 had an amazing safety record. You can "prove" anything with statistics if you know how to manipulate them. For instance, they probably had a record low number of incidents last year. Easy to achieve when for several months you're not drilling. Nevermind that the reason you're not drilling is because one incident you did have is the mother of all incidents. That doesn't factor in.

This is why we place statistics after "damned lies".

    (today's xkcd is somewhat relevant)

Yea I ll bet their accident record for 2010 great 10's of thousands of operational hours and 1 accident= 99.9% Safety record.

And they probably pay bonuses for 85%.
