Game is slow and can't change settings

I've been playing simcity 4 deluxe since long ago, but never really cared about the lag until now.

When i saw the system requirements i got confused why my game was so slow, since i could play Bioshock under medium settings smoothly.

My specs: iMac 10.6

2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo,

4GB RAM,

ATI Raedon HD2400,

128MB VRAM

So i searched a while for answers, most of them told me to change the renderer in Video Settings from Hardware to Software, so i did, but every time i restarted the game it never changed from Hardware and the game was still slow.

Then i saw other guy saying that using the RevA UB update helped him, i tried, the game is still slow.

So, is there any way to change the settings through some file? Or is there any other solution that i missed?

Thanks

This will all rely on how big your city is, and how much stuff you have in your plugins folder.

If you have a huge city, and heaps in your plugins folder, then the game is going to go really slow trying to get all of that to work. It has to sort through it all and determine whats in use, whats not, and what to load. So essentially you would probably have the equivalent of your whole plugins folder running at once while playing SC4. And even if you don't use all of your plugins in that one city, you will probably have multiple buildings in that city that have been used more than once which all need to be loaded.

Basically, the bigger the city, the slower it gets.

The bigger the Plugins, the slower it gets

The bigger the anything, the slower it gets.

Not much can be done about that.

plus it only uses one processor core, but the 4GB of ram balances out the loading after playing for 20 minutes or so. My PC its slow at first but as long as I dont have a crash to desktop, pretty much my cities load real quickly.

Try playing in a window, that helped me with speed issues on my parents' iMac. You can also tweak the advanced settings by holding down option when you start the game, there you can try using the 32bit Z Buffer and/or compatibility mode.
