SC4 Update 638 problem

I just bought a new sony viao and am trying to get back into SC4 (running deluxe version).  I have an INTEL core i3 330 processor.

I've downloaded the 638 update from the EA site (as well as SC4devotion.com)  I've save the file to my desktop and ran it.  A pop-up box comes up and states that I've succesfully updated my file.  However, SC4Devotion.com states that there should be some file size changes on the following files....

  • SimCity 4.exe should be updated to version 1.1.638.0. File size should be 8,407,514 (Deluxe) or 8,407,542 (Rush Hour)

  • Graphics Rules.sgr should be updated to 20,171 bytes

  • SimCity 1.dat should be updated to 144,596,245 bytes

  • SimCity 2.dat should be updated to 168,588,181 bytes

  • SimCity 3.dat should be updated to 115,117,583 bytes

  • SimCity 4.dat should be updated to 125,624,858 bytes

My files however, are not updated.  The sizes of the files on my pc are as follows:

GraphicsRules.sgr 20 KB

SimCity 1.dat 141,208 KB

SimCity 2.dat 164,637 KB

SimCity 3.dat 112,420 KB

SimCity 4.dat 122,681 KB

To me, that insinuates that I did not actually apply the updates.

Anyone have any advice for help on this issue?

I'd suggest that you compare number of bytes with number of bytes, rather than with number of KB. Your KB are very likely rounded and the slight difference between the numbers is likely a rounding error.  I assume that you know that 1 KB is 1024 bytes.

The updates will not complete properly if ANY sc4 "executive" (those install in the "programs" directory by the install process) is mod'ed by ANYTHING.. you can have no patches for "no cd" or "cpu priority" or "affinity" "CAM"etc applied to any of them.. the easiest way to KNOW what version you have is select the file and right click it and click the "version" tab to see what version you are currently using. After applying the 638 patch you can move to the 640 patch for "nightlights" If you have altered any of the "install files" you will have to reinstall (or if you know what you're doing, replace the "revised" files with the proper ones from the install CD) before you will succeed with the update
