Im always interested in upgrading to newer and better hardware. Especially to max out this game. Most of us have figured out that ATI's new generation cards have issues with display at high population that result in polygons emitting from the center of town and the HUGE TREE that casts a massive shadow. If these similar problems exist on the new generation of Nvidia cards. Some of us would like to know, either to persuade a purchase or support it. Thanks in advance.

WE DONT WANT THIS:

Seriously? nobody here has gotten one?

You people are seriously gonna make me buy one Im telling you. I really hope MC is aware of this graphical issue. If I buy this new hardware I want to know that the game will be updated to work with it as intended. $500 for a mammoth tree will be totally unacceptable.

Hmm, why would you need to upgrade for this game? Doesn't two GTX 285 max it out enough?

Its considered an upgrade givin that cards in sli arent supported by this game and its still pretty choppy even as with my 5850. I think Im still gonna wait for the full fermi card. but anyone else please chime in.

your 5850 lags? Well then the rest of us have no hope LOL. In the next few weeks i'm upgrading from a 2005 ATI 1xxx series card to a 4770, and people say they can almost max out the game (high and 6x AA) without lag on around 1440x900 on a 9800GT (slightly worse perfomer than the 4770, especially when AA is on), when they have cities less than 750k.

What other cards have you used with this game? Maybe the newer ones perform worse? (5850 technically isn't supported).

oooohhh, the first post shows how well I know that. took me until 4.6 million before my 5850 produced the polygon playground.

I used the GTX 260-216 black edition, the 5850, and a single and double GTX285. I want buttery gameplay in big cities. Im afraid wih what ive experienced Ill go broke in order to do it. Youll get lag no matter what. Depends on how fast you want your cpu to run..

this happens. My biggest city wouldnt play for more than 7 minutes before a crash. even to save after 3 seconds of playing it would crash while saving. that was with 12 gigs of memory available but would crash when ~4 gigs were currently being used by the entire system.

the game has problems with video cards with Gddr5 memory, so the new ati and nvidia's are using this type of memory

Thanks so much for this info! Looks like all high end ATI cards are off limits for those who want to play cities XL mostly (like me).

GDDR5 is on the ATI 4700s and up (other than 4830 + 4850, and a few low end 5000 series cards) i think, on pretty much all of them.

Nvidia is the way to go! Ofcourse, the GTX 400 series is off limits too...

So I would say the best ATI card without GDDR5 is the 4850, which has performance just under the GTS 250. Leaving the best and most compatible card for this game at the 295. You have a 285, so actually you've pretty much maxed the game already in terms of graphics (although a 295 may be a worthy upgrade, with about 20% increase in speed).

and a 4850 x2 is just under the 285. Sucks to know Im maxed out unless I get a third card. So has anyone with even a 4000 series AMD card experienced the same polygon problems and the tree?
