hi everyone.

After having a horrible time trying to get this game working, i had decided to uninstall the game completely and reinstalling a fresh copy.

I installed simcity 4 and updated it using "update-SKU2_to_p2". I then installed simcity 4 rush hour and applied "update_SKU2-TO_p1_B638".

The game version is now at 1.1.638.0.

When i go about starting the game, it loads the bridge screen and then breifly turns desktop black with a blank screen before returning to desktop 2-3 seconds later.

The game hasnt successful loaded as of yet.

Does anyone have any ideas and suggestions?

I had this issue happen to me. I suspected it was one of my cities. So what I did was removed the last city I played in before the CTD started happening. I did this by opening the config bitmap in Paint.NET and changing it, then saving it, and then loading the region. I lost a city, but kept a region.

    Trust Christ.

I recently had the same type of startup crash you're having, and it turned out to be because the sound on my motherboard had been disabled. Once I enabled it the game worked. There are probably other things you can check as well but I'll leave that for the techie experts to answer. All I know is that the game needs fully working sound in order to run even if other games on your machine don't... on my pc for example, Halo would run fine (although silently) before I enabled my sound.

Simcity 4 hasnt had a successful boot and havent yet been able to reach the introduction video. The last time my simcity worked was a year or so ago but since then ive uninstalled it to make room for other stuff. if i can rembmer correctly, my pc has had a few upgrades here and there but according to many individuals, the new hardware runs fine.

All my drivers are upto date and my audio works just fine. I dont think i could live without sound lol. would do my nut in lol. some individuals have said it could be my gpu but its not exactly old and it has the latest drivers and runs other games with ease. i have 2x geforce 8800 gtx's within my machine but not on sli as i know it wouldnt work with it enabled. im thinking maybe my pc just doesnt like old programs lol. i dont know.

    Please help 15.gif

    ive tried the following:

having had upto date drivers, i decided to roll back them to see if anything happens. Nothing. (audio and gpu drivers)

using duel monitors, i decided to lose 1 monitor to see if that made a difference. nothing.

switching between all compatibility modes, do nothing.

using run as administrator does nothing.

Changing a sequence of targets within the shortcut to skip introduction and resolution does nothing.

Tried playing within safe mode, but simcity doesnt even try.

tried 4 reinstallations in different ways including the deletion of previous files and content left behind, with a registry clean too.

tried installing simcity 4/ rush hour onto my dad's pc and worked fine, however, i do not have access to play on his pc most if not none of the time. My pc with much better specs hates it lol.

Firewall exception dispite no need for an offline game to access the internet.

User account control switched off, as always.

Tried changing the config-log for resolution etc.

there are a couple other things ive tried but these above are the main ones.

It looks like the only thing you haven't tried is flashing your BIOS.  Check your motherboards manufacturer to see if it's up to date.   Here's a good guide and info about flashing / updating your BIOS.  Link

Which drivers for the graphics card did you try to use? I have a GeForce 8400M GS running on Forceware 156.69 and there are no issues. Others have reported that 191.07 also works fine.

    Some other ideas:

Turn off ALL background tasks. This includes virus scanners, IM programs, USB device management programs (like for the mouse), everything and anything you find in the bottom taskbar tray and in msconfig (but you should do a google search for each item to make sure that you're not disabling something crucial, like the operating system for example). Alternatively, you can do the ctrl-alt-del and kill processes from there. I generally only kill processes whose user name is mine, and not SYSTEM or NETWORK / LOCAL SERVICE. This Omnibus article has also has a list of processes you shouldn't shut down.

Also, this link has a list of the shortcut options you can use with SC4. Try looking through these and see if there are some that might help (perhaps switch to software mode, or force the game to use only one CPU?). You may need to register to view the link.

i currently have the following drivers:

    - motherboard - nforce 680i sli - (Version 15.51 WHQL driver) Latest

    http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/nforce_vista64_15.51b_uk.html

    - onboard motherboard HDMI sound - (version 1.00.00.59 WHQL) Latest

    http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/hdmi_audio_xp_vista_win7_1.00.00.59_uk.html

    Gpu's - 2x geforce 8800gtx - (version 197.13 WHQL) Latest

    http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/win7_winvista_64bit_197.13_whql_uk.html

i have used varies GPU driver versions but not the motherboard due to BIOS changes which i dont wish to mess with for an old game.

The GPU versions used are as follows:

    195.62_desktop_win7_winvista_64bit_international_whql

    190.38_desktop_win7_winvista_64bit_english_whql

    186.18_desktop_win7_winvista_64bit_international_whql

    185.85_desktop_winvista_64bit_international_whql

    182.50_geforce_winvista_64bit_international_whql

    182.08_geforce_winvista_64bit_international_whql

I havent tried any drivers before 180 whql as i run 3d applications which needs sufficient drivers.

When i first installed simcity4 and started to realise it wouldnt work, i did update my motherboard and used this prvious driver:

    15.25_nforce_winvista64_international_whql

For msconfig, i do clear out the majority of programs which startup in windows and these have been switched off. Due to working in 3d applications for my university course, i dont wish to turn off vital windows applications and all windows apps are switched on. I'am running 2 monitors at the resolution of 1440 by 900 and have tried to change the config-log within the simcity4 directory to associate towards this but nothing.

just tried a very old gpu 8 series driver, 169.21_forceware_winxp_64bit_english_whql. still nothing works. just downloading v191.07 drivers that yunxiang has suggested.

force ware v156.69 drivers dont support 8800gtx gpus. only as high as 7 series and 8700 M gt

Have you gone into the folders and tried opening different regions manually? Like I said with my case, I couldn't open my region, but Timbuktuu opened for me.

Have you checked your CD? One of my drives gave my one SC4 CD a laser burn. There was a faint ring on the bottom of the disc.

    Trust Christ.

    @ Jgellock.

How do you mean by openning the regions manually? I cant get ingame to change or do anything with them. i have also gone about taking all the regions out of both documents and maxis directories to see if anything happens. Nothing. My cd seems fine as i can run simcity 4 rush hour on my dad's pc as i mentioned previously. problem is that i can never get access to my dad's pc, and only installed it on his to see if it worked. I dont believe the regions are interfering with my issue as the game isnt able to boot into the introduction video let alone get onto any region.

Ive tried all GPU drivers suggested and still nothing. i can still only see the bridge popup screen before my screen going black attempting to go ingame and then returning to desktop a few seconds later. No error messages or logs stating any issue.

I guess im at a loss when it comes to playing simcity 4 and simcity 4 rush hour, atleast until i finish my university course end of this month. I can then go about formatting my pc and hope i can salvage some playing time with some nice room on the HDD again 4.gif
