Star Trek (2009) - Spoilers

This edition of the franchise was mentioned a few times during the Oscar broadcast, so I watched it on demand.

Review:

A prequel - whadda y' know.  New cast, same characters, same character traits, everyone much younger.  Kirk is born, grows up, joins the academy, is his usual troublemaking self.  Spock (older, but not much), rejects Vulcan society and joins Starfleet.

Trouble with the time-traveling Romulans results in at least one new time line.  Lots of mixing and combat.  Uhura has a thing for Spock which is returned (some Vulcan).  Other universe Spock (Leonard Nimoy, very aged) sets the boys right.  Bad guys get theirs, but the Enterprise stays in the new time line.  Hokey ending with Kirk winding up in command of Enterprise with the usual suspects.  One causal loop at the end in a scene between the two Spocks.  We don't know what happens to the elder Spock, only that he leaves.  This gives Leonard Nimoy a chance to get his hand in.

The important thing here is the new time line.  Leaves us open for all kinds of sequels.

Technically, CGI by ILM, so much better than the old franchise's early efforts.  In one scene they are diving in space, and there is total silence (hurray!).  Destruction of Vulcan by a black hole very convincing with good fractals.  With modern CGI and future developments, I expect further adventures sooner than before.  If you have the old franchise on media, make sure it is archival because it will be a collector's item some time.  The make-up is much better.  The Vulcan ears are more in proportion.  Scotty picks up a new alien sidekick.

Only major aliens seen are the Romulans.  Klingons mentioned, but none seen.  A neat alien in one of the bar scenes but he is unidentified.  There are other aliens aboard Enterprise but they are not emphasized or introduced.  Lots and lots of room to continue for a few more years.  Let's hope they don't have any tribbles.

Personaly i would have been happier for them to go away from the Kirk story line.

But i understand why they did it.

there is  problem, using a new cast, sure they are young but are the actors themselves going to want to be playing these part for the rest of thier lives like shatner did?

I give em 2 mabey 3 movies with this cast before they say enough or your priced out of hireing them for ST #15. Sequel ususaly end with #3, There will not be a spider man 4 at least not with whats his name.

So, did you like it?  Not like it?  You never said whether you did or didn't in your 'review.'  Me personally, 'bout time they updated ST and IMO, it's the best ST film to date.  2009 was a damn good year for sci-fi with Star Trek, District 9 and Moon.

I was surprised how much I liked it.   I couldn't imagine Zachary Quinto (aka Sylar) playing Spock but his performance far exceeded my expectations.

I enjoyed how I could tell who the characters were before they identified themselves.  (Was there any doubt that was Leonard McCoy after he uttered the first line or two?)

It will be interesting to see how the alternate universe plays out.  Both Kirk and Spock are now without parental influences that they had before.   The original Federation was formed between Earth and Vulcan, which no longer exists.  Spock is exhibiting behavior he didn't before.  (yeah, he and Uhura did some flirting in the original series but they weren't kissing on the transporter pad.)

The fanfic writers who gave Sulu and Uhura their first names must be enjoying this.  Fanfic doesn't often make it onto the big screen.

We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: “I am talking with you in order to persuade you.” No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing.    - Pope Francis

I don't know whether I really liked it or not.  I'll wait until they expand it a little.  The original ST on TV was far too hokey for these times, and the characters were pretty one dimensional.  The new ones are better, but will the franchise last?

As far as changing casts is concerned, I seem to remember more than one Batman, more than one Superman, etc.  Casting is immaterial is if the characters are played right.  Androgynous faces like these can be easily replaced.

I do know there is a sequel in the works in pre-production mode and will probably be in theaters sometime next year or 2012.

Loved your review N_B and agree 100%!

A good review should leave the like and dis-like to the viewer and reader. Leaving out personal opinions, is a wise choice 2.gif

I for one, enjoyed the new 'Bones' - thought he was portrayed the most accurate of all the original cast.

If by "film industry" you include the TV crowd as well, I tend to agree.  Look at the current stuff on TV; e.g. Caprica, and you can see the only thing that is missing is the commercials for "wonderful Ivory Snow".

I grew up in the era of the real, radio soap operas such as Stella Dallas and Oxydol's Own Ma Perkins, and I am seeing history repeating itself.  Creativity in the media these days is getting fewer and farther between.
