Sharing utilities among regions...

I'm checking out region play for the first time.  I would like to have my residential in the center for commute times, and I would like to only have to develop utilities in one region.  However, I would NOT like to put my power and water in my residential region.  Unfortunately, I can't seem to make neighbor deals with non-adjacent regions.  Is there any way for me to do this?

If you mean simply running pipes or electrical wires across an empty city tile, I've read where a couple players have done this, but I've never got it to work. What will work is to create a chain of developed cities where each one is buying from the previous one in the chain.

For example: In the chain of cities  (A - B - C - D), D buys from C, C buys from B, and B buys from A. This, of course, means that the cities selling need to be buying enough for there own use plus the amount they're selling. So, for instance, C must buy enough from B for it's own use plus the amount it sells to D. To get cities to buy more than it actually uses, I find it easier to start from the end of the chain (City D in this example) and work backwards. Using this "chain" method also means that any changes in cities means opening and adjusting the other cities in the chain so that connections aren't lost.

Hope this makes sense.

All cites involved must have residents, sell city must have surplus and your buy city must have demand and funds,.. any shortage in any of these areas will break the deal.. and of course you must have connections between the involved cities.. that's all i can think of right off.. may be other things someone thinks of

CaptCity may be right, but I'm pretty sure you can only buy from and sell to ajacent tiles, since I think you can't have one tile buying and selling at the same time.

Yeah it makes sense, but I can't seem to buy enough in my residential city to run any of my other cities for a year because the avilable neighbor deals are based on your current usage.  I can see that working if you had a little city selling to a big city that in turn sold to a little city, but otherwise I can't get it to work.

Thanks for the speedy reply though!

Yes, but you can have a series of those adjacent tiles.

It is possible. That's what gets the "chain" to work. You just need to set up the situation to get cities to buy more than they use so the "surplus" can be sold. That's the "trick" to the method.

That's why I find it easier to work backwards. Using my example above. Connect D to C where C has the resources to produce enough for it's own use and to sell to D. After that go to city B. Create resources that are high enough for it's own use plus a surplus that will cover C and D. Once that's done, you can go back into C and delete any producing resources to force C to but from B. C will buy enough for it's own use and sell to D because the C-D connection allready exists. You can then go back up the chain and do the same for city A. I know it's complicate, but it's the way I've gotten it to work.
