Forcing Tunnels

I want to build a rail tunnel through terrain immediately underneath a stretch of avenue, but when I drag the rail it just tries to go across the avenue instead of trying to build a tunnel. Is there a way to force it to build a tunnel?

You would need to dig a hole quite deep a few tiles out from each side of the avenue, use the ground lifter on a tile closer to the avenue.

On the latest version of the Network Addon Mod there are tunnels puzzle pieces they are not subway. They are cool because you can drive through them and you don't need to lower the ground. They just cannot be under buildings. They are for Roads and Trains. The tunnel in my pic is just to show what you can do with it. Boats can go saftley over them too.

If you don't want to do that you could make the area of the avenue much higher than the entrance for the tunnel. then just level it out after the tunnel is dragged. I do that all the time

It's quite easy to make a tunnel even on flat ground, but you have to "get the hang of it" first. I'm sure if you check to omnibus there are even tutorials. Use a digger lot (rail actually requires very little depth.. 8 meters as I recall.. the digger lot actually is called the "rail" lot). Be sure the tunnel side is abrupt (immediate drop to full depth), have one flat tile on the bottom and the approach part can be quite gradually sloped. Of course you have to have a place to come out on the other side.. if it's flat ground you must have a mirror image "hole" on the other side where you expect to exit. A tour of the Omnibus tutorials or a click over to YOUTUBE should get you plenty of examples.

if you have a slope mod you need to first place a rail tile in the hole and then move 1 tile away from it and drag away from the avenue.

Then drag the rail to make a tunnel

Again, be sure to use the hole digger lots, and also, be sure the tunnel is at least 2 tiles away from the avenue on both sides.

If you still fail then you could always use a deeper hole digging lot.

This isn't really related to your question, but using rail "underpasses" is anathema to me.. 4.gif Rail, especially "heavy rail" is very unforgiving of changes in elevation. To be realistic you should route your avenue up and over (constructing "overpasses".. you can still "tunnel through" to pass under this "hump") or having the avenue go under the rail (by making "underpasses" either by digging out and using "on slope" and puzzle piece rail to pass over the avenue) or by using the marrast "puzzle piece" underpasses which look very good.. both would be "real world" representative.. a picky point I know, but just my two cents worth.. 4.gif

I have a slope mod, so it forces me to make smooth grade changes with the rails, and this can mean either the rail remaining level and the other transportation going over it, or (like in the large berms it constructs before bridges) possibly going under the rail. The mod also makes it much easier to force tunnels, because the allowable angle of the grade over a mountain becomes much less.

But I have to be careful of trying to make a tunnel around water. It seems to not want to allow it if the tunnel will dip below sea-level...
