Hope this is still of use to someone.

Just installed Sim City 4 Deluxe on a Win7 64 bit machine.

* nVidia GTX260 card

* 6GB ram

* Core i7 'Bloomfield' (2.66ghz?) processor

Game wouldn't boot standard. Tried XP SP 2 & 3, as well as Vista vanilla & SP2 compatibility modes. Didn't work.

To get the game running, take the following steps:

1.) Create a shortcut from the Sim City folder on the desktop.

2.) Right click the new shortcut, go to "Properties"

3.) Under the "Shortcut" tab will be a box labeled "Target" and should include the pathway for running the game.

4.) At the end of "\SimCity 4.exe" hit space, once, and then paste the following without the quotes:

"-w -r1280x1024"

5.) Game should now run. I only ran it for 5 minutes, but it appeared to be free of crashes and graphics glitches.

This has become a "standard problem" since people have gone to displays that are not 3:4 ratios ..ie 800x600, 1600x1200 (the largest SC4 was designed to function in) etc.. The "new" HD screens are designed for other ratios, most commonly 16:9 but also on notebooks which often have shortened vertical compared to the horizontal... For this reason it is probably a GOOD idea to follow these steps, just as a standard part of an SC4 install ON ANY SYSTEM.. doesn't matter if it is XP, W7, Vista, etc.  SC4 WILL NOT START UP in any other ratio without this change

When you install SC4:

Originally posted by: Gahagan

1.) Create a shortcut [or edit "properties" on the shortcut created by the game install] from the Sim City folder on the desktop.

2.) Right click the new shortcut, go to "Properties"

3.) Under the "Shortcut" tab will be a box labeled "Target" and should include the pathway for running the game.

4.) At the end of "\SimCity 4.exe"  (outside the quotes) hit space, once, and then add the following without the quotes:

"-w -rWWWWxHHHH"quote>

NOTE: WWWW and HHHH are the width and height of your monitor display

Now save and use the shortcut to run simcity. I have edited those a bit to apply to a more general case

This will not stop all video, driver, DX, etc problems but will avoid what has become a very common issue standing in the way of successful startup

There's a tutorial on the Omnibus: Vista vs. SC4. Same rules apply here. To check if that is the cause of crashes you need to get the game to at least region level; then ALT-CTRL-DEL to bring up the task manager; switch to Processes, and find the simcity4 process; right-click and set affinity to CPU0, and priority to HIGH (not real time!). Close task manager, continue playing. If it does not crash, that tutorial is your next step.

If it contnues to crash, you have other problems.

SC4 was designed when only 1 core processors exist. So it will only use 1 core. In Windows 7, you can try to make it use multiple, but also you can make it use a quieter core as well.

My SC4 was working completely fine and after downloading some new mods/buildings etc, i was working on my new city tile and it'd started to grow and it just crashed (Hasn't crashed in awhile either), and every time i open that one tile it crashes, all my other tiles work fine

My copy has decided to CTD now. Building up a city to 40,000 people so far had absolutly no problems and no crashes. Downloaded a canal mod and everything was peachy for a couple of hours, then had a CTD. They grew more frequent, every 10 mins it would crash, then 5 to the situation where now it crashes after about 20 seconds of going into the city. I've moved all my plugins out, set the affinity and priority which does absolutly nothing.

Does this happen in a specifc city or any city?

Have you tried a sandbox test with and without the canal mod?

Please specify what hardware you have including the amount of VRAM (swap file, virtual memory) and the size of your plugin suite.

All plugins do not coexist.  You may have to decide which ones to keep.

Tried three cities in one region. Reproduced the CTD in 3 different cities, one which has a population of 40,000; one 700 and a new one that just had god mode trees planted.

In the 'Timbuktu' region, put in the plugins and worked fine, added the canal and worked fine.

The only thing that looks a little off is your VRAM.  I would put it up to at least 4GB to match your physical RAM.  This is just a gut feeling.  Do you have a trees or terrain mod?  If you have hole digging lots, make sure you have installed the whole suite.

Try removing the plugin from your folder, I think it's what causes the problem. I don't think there is anything you can do about it, if the plugin is the problem.

    Hi all,

I am new to this forum and am having a similar problem others are having. I, hopefully, atached an image of the problem. I have tried searching this and other forums and haven't found anything remotely close other than this thread, so I apologize if this was answered someplace else. The glitch occurs in region view on, so far, large maps only AND regions I have downloaded over Simtropolis. It does not occur with regions pre-made by Maxis. I have had this problem with three region downloads so far. I have tried different resolutions, renderings, and modification of the shortcut application on my desktop, all with no results. I also don't intereact with the computer when the regions are created and I turn the screen saver off. I am able to play the large map, however cannot play a map above/behind the glitch... and it just looks like crap.

    Thanks for any help!

    Welcome to the conversation

Interesting machine.  I couldn't open your illustration, but probably because I am on Linux.

The only thing I would suggest is that you increase your VRAM.  As an old operating system guy I have a preference for at least 2GB per core which im my case should be 4GB as I have an Athlon II x2.  (in fact I have 10GB because Linux uses swap partitions.)

The only other cautionary tale I have for you is to remember that this is a legacy game build around 2000 and it doesn't know anythng about modern graphics processors.  Make sure all your GPU settings are on "application selected" or equivalent.  This will cause them to be off when you run the game.

There is a known bug in the game if you try to run at a vertical resolution of 1200 px or more.  This will cause lines to appear at the bottom of regions, but it is harmless.

Sorry about that. Here's what the image looks like:

    12947217.jpg

I'm really confused on what you said about VRAM. I just bought my computer last August (2010), and upgraded to close to the best video card I could put in the machine. 2 GB is a lot of memory on board two video cards. The computer I had prior to my current one, had an Nvidia GeForce, something or whatever, with not even a gig of VRAM and only 2 GB RAM, and the game ran fine. I can't see how this would be a VRAM issue. On a side note, running at 1024 x 768 resolution in-game (using the appended code in the shortcut icon), does seem to help as earlier today I didn't have the problem. Not sure, however, if it is a fussy issue or what. I appreciate the input 1.gif

I don't think the game would use two video cards.  In any case, did you make sure that both of them are set to "application selected" on all options?  Your illustration indicates some kind of video card interference.  Try setting the game to software rendering and see if this problem clears up.  If it does, then the problem is definitiely the hardware, and futher investigateion is needed.

Sorry about the confusion.  VRAM to me is Virtual Memory, not Video RAM.  If you have a lot of plugins, this may be your problem.

Sorry for the late reply, had lots of uni work. Done the virtual RAM. I have a terrain mod and growable trees. I only have the one terrain mod though, triple checked that and I haven't used any of the growable trees. Hole digging lot is complete.

Yuppie, used the guide on page 1 before posting.

It seems to be an utterly random issue. Where it was crashing after seconds it stopped, and I was able to do about 2 hours before a CTD. Other times however it's crashing how I said.

OK.  I've been investigating CTDs lately.  One of the things I have learned is that if you do a manual save (CTRL+s) farily frequently, it seems to reset whatever is going on, and you are good for a while longer.

That helps when it decides to play long, like today I had 2 decent sessions. Then did UDI GLR to test the connections, it did a CTD just after I did that. Now when I try and start the city it CTD's after about 5 seconds without me doing anything.

I guess I'm pretty lucky! I have had problems in the past, but I think its been problems with certain cities rather than my hardware. I have had cities that crash on loading, I deleted it then started over and all was fine...

    For the record I have...

    AMD Turion 64 x2 2.2Ghz

    4Gb RAM

    128Mb GeForce 8400M GS

    320GB HDD

    Windows 7 Pro 64bit

    17" Screen

Right now it works fine and I don't have to change anything. The only time it ever crashes is when I use the NAM, and do that thing where you drag 2 transport enabled objects over each other, but I think that is a known fault!

Well, it is the usual dump. A dereferenced zero pointer. Not very useful since we don't have the debug symbol table, so they all look pretty much alike.

Please describe your machine, operating system and the size of plugins suite. I can see from this that you have 2GB of real and are on windows NT 6.1 with the most recent version of the game fully patched. NT6.1 if I remember correctly is either Vista or XP. It might even be Windows 7, as all of the current stuff is built on the old NT3.1 base.

While you shouldn't need much, if any, virtual space, you do have to accommodate any background tasks' memory demands, so I'd suggest setting it up to a permanent size of 4,095MB. Disk space is cheap.

Because none of us has the debug symbols, nor the source for this game, there is no point in posting anything past the register panel in future. Please refrain from posting full exception reports as they just take up server space to no purpose.

What were you doing when the crash occurred?

Thanks. Everyone except the marketing people at Microsoft seem to want to call this version NT 6.1. I think that message is pretty succinct.

With 8GB of plugins and only 4GB of ram, and the game being totally memory resident, where do you think your plugins have to go? Onto the swap file, that's where. You probably need a pretty big swap file. Might I suggest something on the order of 10GB if your 8GB is the in-memory size of your plugins. You seem to be trying to get an elephant into a bread box. How can you possibly manage all those plugins and have any kind of usable menu system?

You should prune any that you never use or never have used. You sound like you have a case of "gee I want that one because its pretty" syndrome. Each and every one of them should have been tested when your got it to see if it worked with the ones you already had. Did you do that? If not, I suggest you put them all into a different place and start adding them one by one until you find the one that is causing your problem.

    Hello mates

My SC4 deluxe is a super fan of the CTD. I saved just before the crash to make some test and I tried all the things you said in this topic, nothing work... The CTD happen when I put a Police station. I had sometimes a CTD in others cities with a road or other things.

I have Win 7 home premium 64 bit

    its a gaming laptop

    Intel Core I5 M560 2.67 Ghz 4 core

    4 GB RAM

ATI mobility radeon HD 5650 1GB

It seems there is no way for me, i tried everything i found on web. I have an XP sp3 session on my VM virtual box emulator on Win 7. Maybe its better i try on XP? Win 7 will disturb the RAM with 2 OS running at the same time?

If somebody knows the way to stop this CTD, please, help ;)

    @Darkfakt:

I have a couple questions for you:

    1. Is it a Maxis police station you are trying to place or is it a custom one?

    2. You said you are trying to run simcity on a VM. Will it work if you run it on Windows 7 (Not on the virtual machine)?

Well, for openers, the first poster should edit the opening post by pulling the text into an HTML editor like KompoZer, switch from source to final, and copy only the text into the post. All that HTML hurts my eyes.

I have run this program on:

Windows XP SP2 on a very small machine with good NVidia graphics.

On that same machine I switched to Linux/wine (2.1) no problems. Later, my GPU went out of support so ...

I upgraded, and now I have an Athlon X2 dual core 64-bit Linux decor with an ATI 3000 GPU, 4GB RAM and 10GB swap space.

Currently runs fine on the wine 1.3.21 beta in software rendering. Will also run for a short time on hardware rendering, but the lack of wine's ability to supply more than one back-buffer (an admitted failing) eventually corrupts the hardware graphics. The game is very stable, and only the usual zero pointer dereference crashes occur. I suffer this by saving often (CTRL+s).

I suspect that all the people who have trouble running, simply don't understand that this is a legacy program that requires tender, loving care to run at all under operating systems later than Window XP SP3, and on fancy hardware that didn't exist in the implementation time-frame (2002).

My external settings for this game are:

wine runs as Windows 2003 with a virtual desktop.

My ATI card is set up to only use its features when called for by the program that is being loaded. SC4 uses none of them.

My dual core doesn't care. I have sat in the system monitor and watched it cheerfully swap between the two processors, but only one is assigned at a time. In my 4GB with a lot of background stuff running, I hardly ever see access to the swap file when the program is on. It does grow over 2 GB in load size for a big city full of objects, but my plugin load is only around 300MB. Huge plugin suites may very well cause swapping. Watch the disk light, and find out. If there is a lot of disk activity after the city is loaded, you are swapping. It is possible to hang in a deadly embrace, but unlikely. But swapping will slow the game down quite a bit.

I suggest that if you have multi-processor problems, you look in your BIOS first to see if you are forcing multi-threading when you should not. Then check your operating system's update status. You may need an O/S fix.

    1. Is it a Maxis police station you are trying to place or is it a custom one?

Its the normal Maxis Large deluxe police station. Everytime I put it, it crash.

    2. You said you are trying to run simcity on a VM. Will it work if you run it on Windows 7 (Not on the virtual machine)?

    I made some test today.

It was running on the normal Windows Seven. I have two computers. I tried the same save file on win XP sp 3 installed on VMware fusion on a MAC Leopard Intel 2.66 ghz Intel Core 2 Duo 4 GB DDR3

    with a NVidia Geforce 9400.

    I had the same crash.

I tried the 'one core fix' on the line in priorities of the short cut I found on this thread : http://simcityforum.com/showthread.php?t=500&page=3

So i can say its not a OS problem. I have the same problem on XP and win 7.

Its not a memory problem, i have 4 GB on both computer and i picked up my virtual memory at 8192 MB.

I did the Ctrl shift esc and i always checked, only one core is checked.

No, its just this [Edit: Language - CaptCity] station... when i put it, it crash.

I dont have many plugin installed. The NAM and some functionnal things i tried, less than 200 MB.

I tried to put out the plugins and all others stuff but the problem still remain...

Maybe SC4 just has some problems no?
