Hi, and welcome to my lot thread.

I've only posted 5 lots which each took me about 5 minutes so not much work went into them. Please give me some ideas of things i could design using the files that come with simcity combined with plugins or just either independently.

First of all, it's nice to see that you have opened a lot thread.

Now I'm a bit surprised - may I ask why you impose this limitation to Maxis files on yourself? If you don't have Rush Hour, you can get SC4Deluxe (which includes Rush Hour) dead cheap these days. This will enable you to use any texture or prop pack you like.

You know, stuff using Maxis props has been done from 2003 up to today... thousands of lots have been designed (and most by people who spent far more time on them than 5 minutes!), so it's pretty logical that there are few (if any) things that haven't been made yet.

Your indirect offer to take requests is nice, but honestly I wouldn't request something from a lot maker who openly admits to have spent not more than 5 minutes on his previous lots and ran out of ideas afterwards. Not to mention that the limitation to Maxis content will be an important aspect at this point once again. After all, I doubt that many people can imagine something that (a) hasn't been done yet, and (b) will look good with Maxis props and textures only.

In fact, e.g. your idea of a small military facility isn't bad at all, but the way you put it into practice shows some problems. Leaving aside the question "Maxis or custom props?", the result clearly showed the lack of time and thought put into it - see my comments on the STEX.

That's the first point I would address: What should be there, how should it be arranged? What's convincing? Your military lot, for example, showed some weaknesses that cannot be ascribed to the lack of any external dependencies - they were more due to a lack of attention and thought.

 

The next step would be to ask yourself: Can all this be achieved using Maxis props alone, or can I achieve substantial improvement using a limited number of dependencies? (It doesn't make sense to use an external dependency pack just because a tiny flower on the lot will look a tiny bit better that way, even though the lot will end up having 12 dependencies. However, if a prop pack offers various useful and interesting objects that are substantially better, it's probably a good choice)

To stick with your military stuff, I mentioned on the STEX that a fence would be needed. Now try the Maxis fences... corrugated metal? A wooden picket fence? A simple board fence? Not quite convincing for a military base, eh? That's where a dependency pack like PEG's Security Chainlink Fence could make a real difference... I'm just mentioning that as an example of the way you could make things better.

Well, I reckon that's more than enough waffle for the time being - let's see how you continue!

I Would say it's hard to help you with ideas on lot making,that is something
that should come to you as your ready to lot something or while you make a
lot.

If you want ideas of how it should go search the stex there are alot of lots to
help give you an undertanding of lotting,Check out my files in my link in my
signature if it will help aswell.

Hi there (mainly T Wrecks)

On one of my files, I said I would upload something allot more creative in a few weeks. i've designed a bomb range and a communication tower. The communication tower uses some one else's files so I best not upload that as I may get suspended. the bomb range is 30x20 and consists of a jail as the HQ, a few means of missile and bomb detonating and a few bunkers. Also a communications array with radio station effect and some army men doing jumping jacks. I have not put any fences on it as this requires something like 13 dependencies which is a bit impractical. Feel free to edit the lot if you want fences. If any of those cardboard boxes pop up, the dependency is probably the ammu nation shooting range (if not post me a reply). This lot did not take me 5 minutes like all my others. It still is not classed as overly complicated though. This is my 7th lot (5th upload) and I am still a beginner. I see what some of you mean about not using just the original maxis stuff, I downloaded a few plug-in packs today and they all work fine in the lot editor. The lot may be uploaded on saturday or sunday (most likely to be Sunday) I found this idea in the lot request thread.

Well i would not mind seeing the lots you made post some pics of them
if you can before you upload,then you can get some feedback on it.

The 13 dependencies would Be crazy

You can upload a lot with other peoples files on it as long as you tell
people in your description where to get the needed files,or at least add
links to them.(Don't include other peoples work in your upload)

in figuring out the dependencies for any of your lots you plan to upload.
The sc4 tool download is at the bottom of that page most of the page is in german
but the download portion is in english along with the sc4 tool.

i got some pictures.

I'm way of finishing it yet so it may be a bit incomplete.

One is a bomb range and the other is a communication tower.

Well looks ok.I think you need to drop the width & depth of the lot though as 30x20

is way too big & there is no need for that as that area can be created in game.

Try a width & depth that fits the main buildings on the lot & doesn't go too far beyond that.

However if you want in the finale upload add 2 versions to the same zip file this way

if someone wants the 30x20 lot they can have it while anyone else can have the other

instead.Thats a great way to keep everyone happy.

Change the grass texture to a concrete or asphalt at least for the buildings,maybe throw

in some lamp posts.

 Here is a smaller version.

I still have the bigger version with the concrete base texture. i'll upload both on saturday or sunday, added a few effects to. The reason it was so big was that you would need all that space to detonate bombs. Anyway that can be created in the game. i agree

I've spent practically all day today on the lot editor (my eyes hurt a little!) i've created a communication tower, a bus station, and small zoo and upgraded the bomb range a little. i'll upload them all tomorrow as I haven't quite finished them. Do you know how to find the dependencies of lots?

I hate to burst your bubble, and I really don't want to sound rude, but remember that there is a maxis bomb range, and it is smaller, yet still similar to this sort of thing. I would refrain from improving this lot, and move on to another, such as a remote army camp, or a fort of some sort. That is just my opinion. Don't give up on getting better though! I think with practice you will be making some awesome lots!
