Am I missing something?

Hi, I've recently bought this game and I can't seem to install it correctly (my computer meets the system requirements, for those who are wondering.)

I've heard people talk around here about a download manager that you get in a registration e-mail. The only e-mail I actually received was regarding the Planet Offer and it didn't contain any necessary information for me to install the game correctly. There's also some talk about the seriel code being behind a maual. I didn't get a manual with the standard edition of Cities XL and the seriel code was actually placed on top of where you put the CD (in the case.)

So I'm just wondering if I'm missing something, because no matter what I do. I can't install the game on my Laptop... and if someone is kind enough to do it... do you think maybe you could give me a step-by-step of how you installed the game. I'm such a newb that I'm sure I overlooked something important.

Pretty much any help would be appreciated at this point,

thanks in advance.

Have you been the XL site, registered on the site and input the code you found?

You need to register to that site to make everything valid 4.gif

Well, this may start to get a little bit confusing so bare with me.

I uninstall the game, pop the disc back inside my PC and click on the Install button. I agree to the terms and select the English language. It starts installing and goes through all 4 pictures and I am then greeted by a message asking if I want to register my account (considering I've already done so, I simply click "cancel" and start to enter my login and password.) I click on "Connect" and I then have to go through a 5-7 minute download (for an update I presume.) After it's done, I click on "install" and a series of pop-up windows start appearing on my task bar (they flash in yellow and they end with ".exe".) It's telling me an unidentified program wants to access my computer. I click "Allow" and a miniature CXL bar appears and fills in green (much like during the process of those 4 pictures.) These keep recurring 20 times (they are relatively short and it says something that goes like "falid - 0 processes killed" most of the time) until I get to a patch that ends with "434". Afterward, my computer tells me that "Cities XL has stopped working."

Note that the game doesn't ask me for my serial number during this installation... maybe because it's already encrypted elsewhere in my PC? Seems pretty fishy to me.

As a point of interest, I have an Acer Vista Laptop with Aspire 4250 / Over 3000 Mb of RAM / NVidia Geforce 7000M

There's a "crystal eye" web-cam integrated within it that may or may not be interfering with the installation (considering it's always off; I doubt so.)

    God help me, I'm doomed!!

I guess I'll just have to return the game, there's no point futzin' around with this piece of crap anymore.

    NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

    Don't do that!

Did you try running the install as an administrator?

So you accept all the pop ups things (because they are basically all the patches) and then it does a hissy fit?

Ok i can use this. What is the error exactly?

You should get a manual with any CXL box you buy. If you didn't get one take the box and every thing with it back to where you purchased it from as ask for a new one. Tell them there was no manual. They probably just forgot to put it in the box when you bort it.

If you purchased it online, inform the people you purchased it from, and tell them there was not Manual and serial code with CXL, Other then that maybe it's on anther bit of paper MC they gave you in the box, but you have to have to one to play.

If that does not work maybe send an Email to MC tell them your situation. They may help. But I doubt it

Also, you don't put your serial number in when you install the game,

You need to register your copy of the game CitiesXL.com. If you have already registered (you have a user name and password),

Then sing in at CitiesXL.com and you will find parts where you can register you copy, with your serial number (that you don't have). You need to sort that out fist.

I'm not 100% shore but I think you have to have register your copy at CitiesXL.COM before you can get the updates. There you be about 300MB or so undated to download. but It sound like to me that you download all the patches from anther site. Why I say that is because I uninstalled the game and I just save the entire EXE file that the game downloads as pitchers onto a USB. When I reinstall it. The game did the same as what happened to you, to solve that problem, I just deleted all the old patcherd, and let the game just download the whole thing again.

May I suggest returning the copy you purchased and re-purchase Cities XL from Steam?

For what it's worth, the error message is this: (despite my doubts that anyone can understand it.)

    "Description:

    Stopped working

    Problem signature:

    Problem Event Name: CLR20r3

    Problem Signature 01: citiesxl.exe

    Problem Signature 02: 1.0.0.0

    Problem Signature 03: 4b2a0691

    Problem Signature 04: CitiesXL

    Problem Signature 05: 1.0.0.0

    Problem Signature 06: 4b2a0691

    Problem Signature 07: 2073

    Problem Signature 08: 1

    Problem Signature 09: System.TypeInitialization

    OS Version: 6.0.6001.2.1.0.768.3

    Locale ID: 4105"

@Commoner: Despite not having the manual, I got a piece of paper that had the serial number placed on top of where you would put the CD. What's even weirder is that the game was bought sealed (as in: it isn't a used game.) Perhaps they ran out of funds to keep making manuals?

Well, I contacted MC hoping for a good reply. I'll just wait until next week before returning it at Costco. I'm just a little bit confused, because I saw my exact same problem happen to another user who had bought the game through steam. So I doubt it would change anything. Does anybody else have the Windows Vista Special Pack 1 thing? I'm thinking maybe it's my computer that can't recognize the game (or vice versa.)

Make sure you update all your drivers. To find out what driver you have ( assuming Vista) go to Control Panel, System, then in the side column thing, device manager, then you should get a list up for your pc's specs. Click Display Adapters adn that is your video card. Google it and search for appropriate drivers. It could also be a sound issue so do the same in finding your sound card.

Ugh... I'd rather not. I already spent $180 so that I can add 2Gb RAM for this game and I don't want to spend some more on something that probably isn't causing the problem.

I don't really care much for $80 as it still won't resolve my issue. $180 probably included installation, taxes and the fact that it was Canadian dollars (instead of U.S. dollars.)

$120-$110 difference actually. 2GB is $50-$60 Canadian dollars But now that you mention installation, then it would be a little bit more.

Regarding your problem... well of course MC is probably the best place to get an answer since this is such a weird issue.

However, something you said caught my eye:

These keep recurring 20 times (they are relatively short and it says something that goes like "falid - 0 processes killed" most of the time) until I get to a patch that ends with "434". quote>
That part in bold is particularly interesting.

     quote>

Thats meant to happen (well at least it happened to me and I can work my game)

Guys, all I really to know is if there was something important in that registration e-mail that I didn't receive. Did it have a download link to some stuff in order to play the game? If so, then there's really something wrong with the copy of the game I have and I'll just return it A.S.A.P. and most likely get another one to try out. Though I think it's really weird that got a bad copy of the game since I took a random copy in the middle of the stack of Cities XL games they had displayed. 0_o Maybe that's the stack was high, they were all defective and people kept returning them and making it worst.

You can always download the game. I don't mean illegally, because you already have your own serial number, so Just uses that. but if I was you and I bort a game that did not come with a proper manual and did not work, I would be asking for a new one.  That’s just me though

All thought when you bort the game it should have come with 2 copies of the game, one for you and the other as a trial version. They both have the same content on it. It should look something like this

    manual_4.jpg

also have you look hear http://www.citiesxl.com/content/view/359/133/?lang=en.

Yeah, I got the 7-Day Trial alongside two sheets on how to install the game and two sheets about G.E.M.s... but no manual. I sent MC a ticket and they responded to me saying that I should update my Nividia drivers and that I should replace the copy that I have with another one.

Dustof, I downloaded the game from their site (not Steam), and they sent me a serial. Although the whole process was kinda unconventional, because I ended up not receiving the hard copy I had ordered (through no fault of MC, I might add). But that's all you should need to install it - along with an account on their site. Now, I guess something is going wrong with the installation. Because you're trying it on a laptop, it might have something to do with that, I don't know. A miriad little stupid things could cause a program not to run properly, including some stuff you already have on your PC - it's almost impossible to know what exactly is causing the problem... now I won't suggest you reinstall Windows, of course9.gif9.gif9.gif9.gif

As for the manual, I'm not sure if they distribute one at all with hardcopies. However, they have a pretty extensive online manual on their site, together with a large FAQ section, you might wanna check that. But still, I thing your best chance lies with communicating the problem to them via a support ticket. I know you probably sent them one, but you might wanna pester them some more to speed up the process 9.gif9.gif9.gif
