Really really need help!

I have been playing Sim city 4 on and off..,, i really like city building games, however sim city just won't fit,, i would really like to be able get a good grasp on sim city 4 concepts.. its awesome how other players can create realistic cities,, i have been experimenting on a lot of things, like taking it slow, providing good traffics flow, lowering taxes.. but to no avail, the biggest city i built is about only 6k people, with funds going down the drain and not even a sky scraper in sight,, some medium sized buildings but thats it.. can anyone tell me what im doing terribly wrong... if its everything well i think i need a sim city 101 from scratch

don't overspend too early, build schools,hospitals and highwayswhen you need them, Wait until crime is a small problem for police, wait until there is a fire before fire stations. Have some taxes.

Also, start with farms. They may not be your cup of tea, but they provide a solid job base (and provide decent money) for your sims. Only build services as funds allow. So, if you cant afford the upkeep on a school without going into the red each month, don't build it. Sims aren't crazy finiky about the taxes early on, so the default 9.0% will work for your problem. If you need to, raise taxes on your I-Ag by .5%-1.0% to get the extra dough coming in (the demand is high enough to counter-act the tax raise.)
