Newbie: help with Regions and Starting Over

Greetings,

I've just started out and made a few (hopefully) understandable mistakes and now I want to start over. The problem is, I wasn't given too many options here - SC4 comes with very few regions and I tried (oh God, I tried) creating my own regions, but it's hard because you have to edit one by one, ignore the border conformity thing for a while unless you want your modifications to get screwed over and after creating, say, a bay spawning several parts of a region, you have to reenter them in God mode one by one and now try to conform the borders and hope for the best... it's crazy...

Alas, I made a few modifications to the region I was playing with... BUT...

1st Problem: I can't rename the region I was playing with...

2nd Problem: I wiped out the cities I had made (because then I was just messing around, trying to learn more about the game, etc and now I want a clean start) but, after wiping out the cities a million times, no matter what I do, the connecting roads I had made between neighbors won't go away. I tried terraforming over them, etc, but the little bits of road won't disappear...

3rd Problem: I can't make a custom region without going crazy.. help? It can't be that hard.. previous simcities had a random terrain generator that made things a LOT easier.

Thank you all for reading this,

Fabio.

Hello, fabittar!

I think what you really need is the [sC4 Terrafomer].  It's a stand-alone program allows you to terraform a region all at once, with all the tools available in the actual SC4 game (and a few that aren't), in full 3-D.

To rename your regions, go into the My Documents/SimCity 4/Regions/[Name of Region] folder, and find the configuration file named "region" within (NOT the one that's called "config;" the file you're looking for should open with Notepad).  There should be an option in there that sets the name of the region; simply change that name to whatever you want, save it, and your region will be renamed 2.gif.

Any more questions, feel free to ask! 4.gif

Quite a few real world maps have been brought to SC4 by others. They are available on the STEX. Even with the SC4 Terraformer, creating a region from scratch can be daunting. With all the variety, I just download maps I like. Good luck!

Thank you Masochist, it worked great! Muck, I actually enjoy creating terrain, but doing it one part at a time is just plain crazy.

Uh, can I ask one more question (I'll just assume 'yes' is in order): from the video tutorials I've watched, a neighboring city will affect the RCI of the adjacent city. But what about the cities that are two, three 'cities' away from a big city (with dense skyscrappers, etc)?? I have the Rush Hour highways and bridges, so I'm wondering whether or not these contribute in bringing in people from distant cities to my center of commerce?

Thank you in advance! And sorry for being such a newbie, I figure these questions are pretty moronic, but how else would I ever know? 9.gif

Hello fabittar, and welcome to the site! Hopefully we can continue to help you in the future. Ok, now to the question at hand. Not directly. It may cause a domino effect, but I've never experienced that first-hand. However, the downtown will always increase demand in the cities adjacent to it. You could build off of that new demand in the newer city to go to the next one (just a theory). Also, even with rush hour, sims hate commuting, so they wont go any farther than one city tile for jobs. I think highways continue the traffic flow though. (Correct me if I'm wrong)

    No problem, glad to help!
