There ya go, chicah.  Gold in the Women's Individual Sprint.

We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: “I am talking with you in order to persuade you.” No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing.    - Pope Francis

....Gold #2! That means we made the 100 gold mark! 100 gold medals in the Winter Olympics since the 1924 games... And first ever Olympic gold in female's biathlon!

Amusingly, NHK's own "official theme song" for their broadcast of the Vancouver winter games in Japan is the recent single "Bless" by j-rockers L'Arc~en~Ciel.  Whoa, no way...j-crooner Hyde as the Voice of Vancouver...the mind boggles!

    Here we have http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ig6-XkXjEHY.

The flowery bishounen strut in white sparkle in the original "Bless" music video.

The recording session in NHK Hall superimposed over scenes mostly of the Nagano games.  I would not have paired Laruku+IOC, but I guess it does work.  Ganbatte, everything is for today!

We have 5 gold now! 9.gif We got two new gold medals today, one in alpine skiing/Super-G and one in women's cross-country. These Olympics are turning out to be good for us after all.

I really expect Norway to exceed all expectations in Alpine events. The runs are very difficult, and that's what they expect, given their record. Congratulations.

B33Rm47: They've been talking about it here too - "another disappointment for hosting country Canada", and so on. But you'll win hockey at least, right? And maybe curling aswell.

N_O_Body: People expect us to do good in the Nordic disciplines, not necessarily the Alpine ones. Aksel Lund Svindal did great today, the whole nation is proud. Marit Bjørgen is btw the first one in Vancouver 2010 to get two gold medals.

I have had a soft spot for Norway since WW II.  I can only admire your people, especially in Nordic events.

The basic problem with the PR is the "Own the Podium" outfit, and its hubristic blatting.  Any mention in the press is good PR no matter how negative.

USA wins 5-3 in prelim round, remeber that it only  prelims.

Both teams played all out tonight, an incredibly good game.

Now if we can get the anouncers to stop calling this win greatest upset in the history of olympic hockey.

Seriously? Both teams are full of all star NHL players it can go either way as far as i can tell.

BTW the Real greatest upset in Olympic Hockey was 30 years ago tomorrow.

    USA 4 USSR 3

Well....I never heard them saying it was the greatest upset ever...They aren't stupid.

But Canada was heavily favored, while both teams are 100% NHL players, it would be like playing the Eastern Conference All-Stars against the Buffalo Sabres.

I never watch sports, and I watched that Hockey game. Really fantastic on both sides! I don't think it compares with beating the Ruskis in 1980, but exciting none the less.

    Fun Olympics so far!

    That just made my day!

Raysfan16:  Miracle? not at all. It was disapointing for us canadians, but hopefully Team Canada has learnt from that, as they should, and it's likely the two will come up against each other in the finals.  That will be the real test of both teams.

ROFLyoshi:  Yeah, it looked pretty fake.  They were probably pretty uncomfortable in that dance.  I thought Virtue and Moir were by far the best in that competition.

Another gold for Norway! And a bronze too! Both in team events, bronze in team ski jumpi and GOLD in cross-country team sprint! Wow, this feels so great! And one of the gold winners in the cross-country lives less than a km away from me, he's grown up in the area and went to the same high school as my sister. 4.gif Made the gold medal feel even better.

So, I happened to end up watching some of Canada versus Sweden women's curling earlier...

I have never seen or heard of this before. All I know is that it looks like it wants to be something kids play with rocks on a frozen pond, not something that any adults in their right mind should be playing professionally, let alone in the olympics.

...and then I am reminded of why I don't take the olympics seriously. They are nothing like how the ancient Greeks intended them to be. It's a travesty, I say!

Curling's a simple sport, yes.. but it's still a pretty good sport, and well played in northern countries. It might not require great physical ability, but it does need a lot of technical ability, to make the precise shot you need to make. It's not just whipping the rock down the ice as hard as you can. 3.gif

And if we did it the way the ancient greeks intended, they'd still be naked, and there would be no female competitors. Things change. 3.gif

And here's an updated medal table! 9.gif Looks like Canada won another gold? *Investigates..*

        NATIONS GOLD SILVER BRONZE TOTAL
    1 USA United States 7 8 10 25
    2 GER Germany 7 9 5 21
    3 NOR Norway 6 3 5 14
    4 RUS Russia 2 3 6 11
    5 CAN Canada 5 4 1 10
    6 KOR South Korea 4 4 1 9
    6 AUT Austria 3 3 3 9
    8 FRA France 2 2 4 8
    9 SUI Switzerland 5 0 2 7
    9 SWE Sweden 3 2 2 7

Ah! Curling.  I used to do that when I worked for the Bank in the late 1960's.  Beat throwing rocks at each other on a frozen pond, and can be a lot of fun.  Qute technical too.  The final ice surface is made with hot water in an aspergillium.

And yes, we did get the gold in Ice Dance.  U.S. silver, Russia bronze.  Something to be said for Mahler's fifth symphony, after all.  Both North American pairs were wonderful, and the Russians were not on.

Today's women's figure skating will be worth a watch.  Joannie Rochette, who is the Canadian champion, lost her mother to a heart attack Sunday, but has said she will skate anyway.  Go Joannie!

And here's another thing you might find interesting:
    Linkie. Thanks, Tom.
