Hello simtropolis users.I have had this idea to make sim city 4 online. It would pretty much be a download installer that Installs onto your game and a new menu option will show "online" when you start up sim city 4.It starts out with a blank region.(No land mass)Then a menu shows up in the corner saying "click here to start a new city" and asks what size region you want and you choose between the small, medium, and large region and how much money you start out with.It will then be placed on the blank region in a random area. Also your probably saying "but how the hell are we supposed to find our region with it being so huge?" It will has have a loading bar menu so that way it will show a list of all the cities you have made and will automatically load your city to the acquired location and you can continue building. Then another person chooses what size they want and then it pops up next to their region.(Think of it like a puzzle persay). You begin to build your city like any other city. Then when you are done with that you save it and exit to the online region and it shows your city and the neighboring city how much you have built and the combined population of all the cities and as the region grows more and more the population will rise making it a super region!.You can dump garbage in other cities and ask for water just like in the game except you have to ask the mayor of that city if he will allow it. It pops-up just like in the single player version of the game. You can also connect your cities with roads, highways, avenues, etc. So that way if your neighboring city doesn't have enough room for his population he can easily bring them yo your neighbors city and help him.As for stex and downloads,it would have to go through tests before anything could be downloaded.Because some people have downloads that other people Don't have and other people have downloads...well you see where I am going with this. And as you know if they don't have the building downloaded it just shows up as a black box or brown box.I would most definitely have the "Nam Mod' as a vital install in the installer (I mean who doesn't have it right!?). You can also browse other peoples cities but just not mess with anything.Everything would be blanked out in grey so you can only choose to exit the region so that way nobody else messes up anyone else's hard work on their city.I know this sounds like alot of work, which it probably is, but since I don't have the manpower and time to make this it might be only a dream but if someone wants to try this feat,it could become a reality.

Anything is possible but I just don't really see it happening, a Simcity4 that is... because as we know when the Sims3 came out Maxis & EA basicly left Simcity4 to slowly die and if not for websites like this I think it might have. Now with the Sims3 out and their chain of expansion packs starting I think any plans for Simcity4 are just that, plans that will never even get started. But again anything is possible.

I do know that cities xl has it but that costs a monthly subscription. And this was supposed to be a free mod for online play.Maybe when sim city 5 comes out or whenever the next sim city game comes out Will Wright will make it online play and make it FREE unlike cities xl.

You should be more worried about Maxis& EA making the next game because so far every other (though it may seem mean to call this) "pretender" that has made a city game has failed for different reaons and personally I feel Cities XL will be no different. I will only get nother city game if I see Maxis & EA behind it and if they stick to the 'forumla' that has worked so well.

Online play? It would be nice but should be free like you said because personally I think the only people who will pay are 'hard core' fans and even then it's almost insulting to them because the fans that stuck with this franchise so long have to pay extra. If it's not free, I wont use it and you should need to pay for online to get the 'full experience' and by that I mean all of the game features. Online should only be an extension of play.

So my requriments for the next game aren't too demanding.

    -Maxis & EA behind it

    -If online, make it free

    -Stick to the same forumla

I think most fans on this site would agree with me on the above three. I would even take Simcity4 graphics (It's not a bad thing)  if they made a Simcity5.

It really does sadden me to see that the franchise they started with so long ago, they just let go for a different game.

Guitar Hero wont leave Guitar Hero for DJ Hero. They will continue both, something Maxis & EA should have did.

Well if I got my facts correct (someone correct me if I'm wrong)

Maxis sold the rights to Simcity, to EA. Which is why Simcity Socities had EA behind it (notice the name "Simcity" Socities).

If this is the case as I fear, then the only way we will see Maxis behind another simcity game is if Maxis rebuys the rights from EA (doubt it) or EA inlist the help of Maxis (which they should of did for SC) which I don't see happening because I think after the failure of SC, EA is afraid to make another "bad investment" into the Simcity franchies.

I personally think the Simcity as we know it is dead.

Again, I hope I am wrong.

i see will wrights next "industry-based game" as the next successor

when i think of 'industry' i think of distribution charts, and schematics...

and an industry-based game i see a massive online world with people creating new industries and distributing them

see how your industry apply to individuals and how all different industries affect their surroundings online on one massive plane for the whole world to develop... the next sim city...sim city 5

on the other note... i think it would be great to setup a region trading network on simtropolis

    our world is a simcity

Unfortunately, you're probably right.  If you talk to EA, they will tell you that Soscieties is a sucessor to SC4, and XL's developers say the same about XL.  Of course, as we all know, Soscieties was not a true sucessor to SC4.  We'll have to wait and see about XL, but I don't suspect it will replace SC4 either.

Indeed, SC4 would have died long ago if it wasn't for this site and others like it that provide a constant stream of new material.  We'll just have to cross our fingers about an SC5.

That's not quite right... EA bought Maxis a long time ago (SC4 also "had EA behind it"), so Maxis didn't exactly "sell them rights" to the SimCity name, EA gained the rights along with the rest of the company's IP when they bought it.  Maxis doesn't exist as an independent entity anymore, they are just an in-house division of EA, and are pretty much confined to working on the Sims at this point.

I personally think the Simcity as we know it is dead.

Unfortunately, on this point you're pretty much spot on, at least as far as EA/Maxis is concerned.  But then again, who cares if it's EA that makes it, as long as the next-gen game has all the features we want?

Personally, I think there's only one way we're going to see a true successor to SC4... check out the link in my sig!

Well like I said before its just an idea. I thought maybe we could make it happen since sim city as we know it is dead and since sim city 4 plus simtropolis is the only thing keeping it alive at the moment we could have a new online mode/mod to hold us over until the new sim city game comes out.If anyone is up to the task go for it. It will probably be the only thing that keeps sim city 4 from dying besides simtropolis.
