Does CXL support Crossfire/SLI?

I've built an expensive machine really only to play SC4 (which doesnt work well) and CXL. I have 5850s in Crossfire and Im wondering if anyone else has these cards or similar and has the game working. Im hoping its supported and isnt yet another problem that keeps CXL in the "fail" catagory

I have not purchased the game yet either*

I'm not sure if it's capable of supporting Sli/Crossfire although the game doesn't even support multi core CPU's so i dont think it will support multi GPU's either.

But im quite sure only 1 5850 is capable of running the game smoothly.

I wonder if this is why my game keeps crashing, I have a 295 and they have two on board GPU's which basically acts like SLI.

My game keeps crashing on the splash screen. Hmm..

great. I hope someone has a positive response to this. How in the heck, today, does a company make a game without multi core/gpu capabilities? and be the only one up to the challenge of making a simulated city building game that all of us would be interested in. I should have kept my 5 year old computer! ...and my I7 is useless now too. well, kinda. I could download the game twice to two different hard drives and go online via two different ethernet ports, that way I could make use of two of the cores....lol.

anyone else have this game running with two separate gpus?

I've never tried using two gpu's. It's true that a game without multi-core support is a bit useless these days.

I thought that official number's has shown that only 30% of all computer's are single-core, still decreasing.

Aldo, I think that making a game multi-core isn't that hard and can still be done 2.gif

Hi Xidillon. I'm running a duo core 3 ghz and two 8800 ultras in SLI. With the exception of a rare crash while playing the game (I play in solo mode only), the game runs great on my machine. By the way, I can't say for sure that my crashes are game related but it doesn't happen very often. Hope this helps.

To My Understanding: CXL does not support SLI (yet)

they tried to meet their deadline, so many things will come up with updates over time. So Just Wait, and you'll Be Fine! 9.gif

oh wow, look at all the positive replies! mostly from aspire LOL (had triple posted). okay so its planned to be added later but has some probs here and there that may be related to multi gpu's. Well its better than the game not starting up with two. I guess I wont have an issue then. Ill give it a shot without worry. anyone else doing this?

It's all fine saying just wait and you will be fine but I have paid for the game and can't use it. If I get back into the game Id be tempted to renew The Planet but I am not going to do that until I get the game working.

Xidillion can you try it with just one GPU active and see if thats the issue?

Edit: I have tried turning off the multi-GPU support in the nVidia control panel but it made no difference, still crashed at the same point. Maybe this isn't a multi-gpu issue.. hmm

I havent bought the released version of the game yet. I was using a 260 black edition gpu during the beta. I dont really want to have to only use one 5850 when I buy the game when I splurged on two to ensure ZERO game lag with full on eyecandy on a 1080p monitor. I had a few game crashes in beta, a few less than others still. Ill be sure to try Crossfire enabled/disabled around christmas time.

Meh, Chris, it doesnt look too promising does it? 15.gif

No it really doesn't, I have only recently upgraded to a 295 GTX because my old card decided to die on me. lol

I am starting to think it may be something else because I tried disabling multi-gpu in the nVidia control panel and it did the same.

If i installed it on my laptop it would run I bet but I really don't want to play it on a laptop that is just going to lag. 15.gif

I had lag after about an hour. then after every restart it would happen sooner.

Everyone blamed everything on the memory leaks, "why are my parks costing $1,009,879,203,551 to lay down?", "Memory leak!"

It would crash every time I barely laid wooded park area over the water, demolished the first city link, lay down too many farms at once, checked park statistics, or walked away and come back to the desktop screen.

Yeah, I really didnt have many many crashes compared to the others which couldnt get through 15 minutes without complaining on the chat box, "crashed again!" but most of those bugs have been issued a fix*

I have submitted a support request to Cities XL to see if they can come up with any ideas on how to fix it, But honestly I am not going to hold my breath 2.gif

Well I got a reply off Cities XL support, they asked me to provide my DxDiag information and the Cities XL log files that the game creates.

Sent them back earlier today and hopefully I'll get a reply with some possible solutions tomorrow, If i do i'll post them up here.

thanks so much, Im eyeing a vapor-x 5870 if crossfire is going to be such a performance hit with this game...even though one 5850 may do the job anyway.

EDIT: Including information found on the CXL site, it may hint at something we're interesed in..

"For instance, if you have an ATI HD4870x2 equipped with the last 9.6 Catalyst drivers, you will need to uninstall the Catalyst Control Center (but not the drivers). The game will look much better."

Not sure Id really want to uninstall CCC.

---on second thought, would this action disable the onboard crossfire? lol, MC, you.....

Well Cities XL support have been amazing, I have to take back the part where I mentioned not holding my breath because they have tried to help every little bit they can.

They made me run an MD5 program on the game files and they have confirmed that my installation is missing files and that I should try downloading it again from their web site. Currently downloading it and hopefully this will fix the issue.

I will report back if it works 4.gif

So they never included anything about your SLI?

Ill ask you this way, your 295 the dual PCB type? is the video of CXL buttery smooth? If so, thats positive enough to make me happy once I get the game.

The video is fine, Plays really well.

They never mentioned anything about SLI or issues with dual gpu cards.

No, thats the dual PCB card. which means all the better as it virtually is two separate actual cards rather than two chips integrated onto one card. Thanks you for the response. Now I only have to worry about the new ATI series cards working well with this game. These cards with SC4 will flash when scrolling (which is expected) and props, smoke, and if I remember right cars as well all dissapear when moving around the map view. So maybe its safe to say..

No major issues reported to link directly with using dual graphics processing units. Game On!

Ok, not making an argument but the pic you put up was of a dual pcb version. But if you have the card you just mentioned then its this http://www.techjamaica.com/forums/showpost.php?s=f63764eabc3c37c69554ab2f603bb011&p=543732&postcount=5 which looks quite nice actually, if it was pictured with the stickers on.

Ill add just one more thing. Once you build a large enough city, the 58xx series cards go right to crap with this games display. Theyre incompatible it seems!

Ive asked them and they dont consider the 5xxx series to be unsupported just because it isnt on the list. So far Im the only bloke to have this series of cards that plays this game. If it doesnt support it yet, itll never be supported. Where have you been since this game was released?! lol
