Is it possible to have a growable lot that has both R and C in it? I have seen buidilngs with different wealth groupings, but not different zoning.

It would be great to make more live/work spaces!

It would be nice. Lots of real life city buildings have stores on the 1st floor with apartments above. Also, real life zoning has mixed residential and commercial.

I think it might be possible, but I wouldn't count on it, I don't quite remember my facts on this.

However if it was, I'm pretty sure it would have been done before, so that's probably a no.

Not all of them are even urban - I live in a town of about 800 people and there are some 2 or 3 story buildings where the 1st floor is a store and the 2nd 3rd where there's a 3rd are apartments. This has been done for a long time, too ("born above a shop" was an insult in Ancient Rome)

And still was in the 1940's - there's a great line in Mildred Pierce where the daughter says to her mother disdainfully, "you'll never be anything but a common frump whose father lived over a grocery store and whose mother took in washing."

Ouch!

The method has been employed previously with industrial and commercial jobs in the same lot.  But I think the game may only recognizes the last exemplar loaded so it would actually only fill one type of jobs (I think it is dependent on the order in which the exemplars are added to the file).  There is actually nothing wrong with applying the R and CS/CO exemplars to a plopable building except for the known abandonment bugs with plopped R buildings.

The biggest problem for growables is the exemplars in each .sc4desc file.  If it has a CS property, it is excluded from selection by lots for R, and likewise if it has the R property, it is excluded from commercial lots.   I'm sure this would just be one "If, Then" statement being removed from the line of the programming to permit it, but that's not possible for obvious reasons and there would be problems with how the game handles it.

The game's algorithms could not handle it because SC4 is essentially a big path finder and image layering program with a few economy bells and whistles to round out a full game (I suspect a large number of CJers do not employ the latter portion of the game essentially using a 'sandbox' mode).  With jobs and residents in the same building, 100% of residents or low wealth jobs (the lesser of the two) would be filled entirely by people within the building.  This would play havoc with the demand and desirability.

They won't loft, but they'll live in a 40+ story high-rise...  34.gif  I've also thought that towering R structures should also have a bit of C jobs.  There's doormen, security, building managers etc.

I think, for purely aesthetic and logistical reasons, it would be better to model and mod it as a straight-up commercial building. Just think of it this way - in large commercial sections of a city, there's been the habit of "lofting" and putting residential above that first floor of commercial; so when a building like this grows in-game, it would look right in a commercial district. But if it were modded as residential, I'd imagine it would look slightly odd to have a set of first floor shops growing on a building in the midst of a lot of other pure residentials, such as apartment buildings and high-rise tenements. Not saying it would look totally wrong, but I think it would work better in your commercial areas...

Look at the lots and BATs that goofyguytpa did - in a lot of cases, for dual-function purposed buildings, he did both residential and a commercial version using the same BAT, just modded different in the Plug-In Manager.

That's a good call-- plus, R buildins often have too many residents and C buildings sometimes had too few.

Though, the jobs thing is less true with smaller buildings.
