Yea, he's been gone over a year now. Said he'd gotten some job. Must be a good one.

Hope so I know he was looking forward to working for the government and having paid sick leave and holidays, here we are getting another paid public holiday to celebrate the Maori New Year

Quote

In Māori culture, Matariki is both the name of the Pleiades star cluster and of the celebration of its first rising in late June or early July. This marked the beginning of the new year in the Māori lunar calendar. Matariki was made an official public holiday in New Zealand in April 2022, with the first celebration on 24 June of that year

Anyway currently our government (Labour Party) is a very loose equivalent to the Democratic Party, the equivalent of the Republican Party is the National Party and it wants to win the next election in 2024 .... they are now hoping that we will all have forgotten by then that the leader of the party went on national TV and announced that the first thing they would do when elected is get rid of one of the other public holidays to make up for us workers having an extra holiday as it seems its bad for business .... there was a lot of back tracking at this point from other members of the party to say they didn't really mean that ....

Not sure this link is going to work, but here goes .... the first of the winter storms has arrived here, picture was taken in the MacKenzie Country (in the South Island) named after a bloke called James Mckenzie who in Mar 1855 was accused of stealing 1000 sheep, charged, jailed and then pardoned in January 1856

Just like in this country- commit a crime, get honored for it. Very scenic pic btw!

Big storm bearing down on us, the "storm of the century" as they like to call it. I call them gully-washers. Getting squalls for the past couple days. As long as we don't hear "The Train", everything's fine. But, if y'all don't hear from me for a few weeks, it means I'm up there with that woman on the bicycle.

As I predicted, feeder bands!

We are in the middle of our first winter storms

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/weather-news/300610597/thunderstorms-snow-and-potential-tornados-to-hit-parts-of-the-country-over-weekend

Video in the news report is why I'm back working from home as the top floor at my work place flooded in the middle of that storm ... flat roof and very dodgy drainage system, water was cascaded thru all the air conditioning vents, lights, and ceiling tiles, etc then the power shorted out, at which point the boss sent us home.

So he makes you work in a flood, but sends you home when the lights go out. I think I might have worked for that guy at one point in my life.

Well, Palmetto bug season begins, and their side took it's first casualty yesterday. One of their advance scouts. I'll be getting them sneaking into the house for the next 5-6 months, till it gets cold. Trouble is, they can flatten out and squeeze through just about any crack in the building, no matter how well I seal things. We've been getting a lot of rain, so I've been expecting them. They're practically impervious to bug spray, and can even take 4 or 5 swats just to daze them enough to carry them off to the nearest toilet. Oh, did I mention they can fly...usually right at your face!

In the boss defence there wasn't much of a timewise gap between the water coming in and then the power going out and to be honest even if he had said go home the moment it started flooding inside I'm not sure I would have left as the weather was atrocious and the car was at the other end of the carpark

We have something called cluster flies they spend all summer out in the fields and forests and then come the cold weather they turn up at people's houses in their thousands to try and get inside where it's nice and warm .... they are also called attic flies

Yea, those are pretty disgusting too. Especially in those quantities. I remember seeing some program about flies. Apparently, in the nano-seconds of landing on your food to being shooed away, they vomit to mark their spot. Which is why they go back exactly to the same place. I cook outside, but I rarely eat outside.

Thought I'd pop into the bar for a quick shot on this holiday. I usually get an invite to some party that goes something like this-

I just sit in a corner somewhere, and let the shock and awe wash over me. Happy 4th of July to those on the board who celebrate it. *:D

Doesn't look like that alive thank goodness, they live about 3000 ft below the ocean surface and if they get hauled up then their bodies undergo decompression which kills them and the bodies end up looking like that hence the name "blobfish"

I'd still be freaked out. More than if I was in the water with a Great White.

They look a bit like a tadpole when alive and maximum size is about a foot so it's sharks that would freak me out

Man, it's been a while since I stepped foot in this place. Hope everyone has been keeping well.

Jack, that definitely sounds like a pleasant time, and a good way to relax after a month of hard work. I got a couple of weeks myself before I go back to Uni for my final term, so I've been trying to get out on walks and all that. Rain has been unpredictable in Southern Ontario, I tell ya what

It's been wall to wall coverage of the Queen dying here, not only what's happening in the UK, but as she was our head of state the NZ government had to go thru all the formalities of confirming King Charles as the new head of state.

There is going to be a public memorial service for her on the 26th of September and we as in the whole country is getting a public holiday on that day as well, which didn't go down well with some businesses who it seemed to think it would put them out of business if they had to pay staff to be off work on the day

I would expect that you'll be doing it all over again, as Charlie doesn't look to be the picture of health. Just curious, who foots the bill for all that, the loyal subjects or the crown? Over here, we only have to endure at most, 8 years of our "royal's" reign. And when they hit the box, we can't get rid of them fast enough!

Most of the costs are paid for by the UK government, but we as in New Zealand pay the Governor-General salary and their operating expenses .... so that's

Salary = $354000 per year (plus she has a number of staff who's salary is also paid for by New Zealand)

Oh we also pay for them to have a state car to use for official duties

Operating costs = about 4.3 million a year.

EDIT: added a website link

Spring here, but every so often the weather "gods aka meteorologist's" like to remind us how close New Zealand is the Antarctica, so they are predicting snow for the South Island which is fairly normal, but they even have my part of the country which is in the North Island and close to the sea to expect "heavy snow" and "road snowfall" tomorrow (Wed) night and into Thursday to be honest its going to be a shock if it does as the last time it snowed here was back in 2011 .... we all build snowmen  *

After this hurricane, I've pretty much had my fill of Mama Nature for this year. Getting ready to send off pics to FEMA to get some sort of money for the damages on my house.

Hope that works out and you get compensated for the damage to your house

No snow here did get an extremely bad hailstorm and a day of slushy white stuff falling, but other than that it was a fairly normal couple of "winter" days
