Well, fellows, we try to keep things constant as much as possible.  Things are changing so fast that the one thing we try to hold on to is creature comforts.  The only thing that has happened much around here is that we have increased the capacity of the autosystem to prepare whatever anyone orders (within reason, of course).  What'll you have?

Well It's good that the autosystem got an upgrade. Sure hope there were no major malfunctions as far as we know. Any ways, I'm actually not sure what I want. What specials do you have on today?

Chilled compote of Freestone Peach Slices with whipped topping of your choice

other choices from the autobar.

I'll have the lobster cocktail, poutine (extra curds), an 8 oz sirloin steak (medium) that is topped with bacon strips and some Iced coffee. Hope this doesn't overload the system!

Just for you, Craig, we can provide a nice leg of mutton with all the trimmings and a spotted dog for dessert.  Choose your poison.

Welcome to August.  It is now midsummer in the Northern Hemisphere, midwinter at the Antipodes and hotter than the tail race of Dis in the Middle East.  The Iraqis have declared a four day holiday because it is too damned hot.  Fortunately, the autosystem provides as needed. 

For our friends in the Levant and thereabouts we have a selection of nice iced sherbets.  We can also provide stuffed bananas or fresh figs.  The main need in a heat wave is shade and lots of water, which is hard in desert country.

For the Antipodes we suggest a nice hot Mulligatawny soup and, for the adventurous, chicken Vindaloo, with dahl or a few chapatis and a glass of coconut milk.

Looking at the burning sun blasting through my windows at the moment, I feel a desire for some ice cream cake after a cold entree.

If the Iraqi example is any indication, we seem to be having a summer heat wave.  Global warming?  It has been a fact for some time.  Someone should tell the ostriches.

This is the kind of lunch you can put together from the autosystem's buffet.

Sliced Tomatoes, sliced hard boiled egg, cucumber spears, a few stuffed olives with a little mayo and paprika, with sugared ripe peach slices.  A real blue plate special for a hot summer day.

Just because the chicken was pippin is no reason to say it wasn't there.  I often eat meals that don't directly chomp down great gobs of flesh.  I am an omnivore, but the price of meat protein is getting to be disgusting.  Most of the stuff on that plate came from local farms.

EDIT: Lunch today consisted of yet another cut up tomato, some sliced cucumber, seasonings and a cut up frankfurter sausage (wiener if you like) with blue cheese dressing.  Diet coke.

One must consume the local produce when it is available.  Good local tomatoes are generally only available here in the summer months and the same applies to cucumbers.  The wieners are made in a factory down the road, and I know exactly what goes into them (prime pork with some other adds).  No ground up cows udders and unborn calves in these.

There are good truck gardens all around me, but the main crops around here are white beans (Navy beans) and corn (maize) with a scattering of soya beans.  Just west of here, the fields are bright yellow with Canola and the Blue Mountain area there is covered with apple orchards.  Thankfully there is also a sprinkling of microbreweries who produce something a lot more drinkable than the water.

Tomorrow is my shopping day and I'll catch the community service over to the market where there will be current produce.  Right now that's tomatoes, capsicum, cucumbers, corn on the cob, lettuce (hydroponic, but local), and a variety of greens.  Fruit of the season is at this time free-stone peaches, plums, and some late berries.

At the time of my previous post, the editor was under revision, and all the drop boxes on the right were missing.  Drag and drop did indeed work.  The continuing work on the site is fascinating.  I see the goodies are back today.

Yesterday was grocery shopping day.  Fresh sweet corn was available so I bought five ears.  I had one for supper last night, but one tasted like two.  Good thing these nuke easily wrapped in wet paper towels.  I was tempted by a third, but resisted with all my might and boiled a potato instead.

Monday, August 31st, 2015.  Well, August goes out by holding up Labour Day for a week.  Next Monday is the touted public holiday and the next day the poor, exhausted, summered-out kids go back to school (except the university students, many of whom are already at it).  So, here is a menu for the final summer fling before school starts:

Cold Meats Platter with Ham, Roast Beef, Turkey pieces, Montreal Smoked Meat, Choice of various cold cuts

Well, Sunday is the day the "daily" coffee klatch in this building doesn't meet.  The LOLs are all over at the church across the corner.  I am not a church goer.  After all these years, I've heard it all before.  So today is experimental food day.

For lunch today, I made a Dagwood sandwich out of egg bread, artisan romaine, and some deli stuff:

2 Slices egg bread, buttered one side
2 Slices Swiss cheese (the real stuff, not that rubber with Kraft's name on it.)
Shredded romaine to cover one slice of the bread (the cheese is on the other one)
Spread the cheese with real mayonnaise
Thin slice of ham (mustard optional)
Thin slice of turkey roll
Salt and pepper to taste.

Delicious.  The lettuce gives freshness to the other ingredients.

Can't have another one right now (it did taste like two) because those were my last Swiss cheese slices and I don't get to the deli until Tuesday.

We are in the Commonwealth here, what did you expect?  Just because Hansard (the Parliamentary record) went to American spelling to save disk space is no reason for any sane Canadian to follow suit.  Most Canadians are at least tri-lingual: Birth-tongue, General Canadian, and General American.
