Missing Program Icons

As others have pointed out, the installer for this game completely forgets to place program icons anywhere.

I have been having to navigate to the windows /programs directory and drill down to find the executable file, citiesxl_game.exe.

When I tried to drag and drop this file onto the start menu, it no longer worked.

Clicking on it results in a popup error.

That's the first time I've ever seen a completely working executable file stop working just because its on the start menu.

Anyone else running into this, and how are you starting your game?

From the Steam client

check in start menu or in %programfiles%\valve\steam

if you have it installed by deafult

edit:

oh, you just seems moved exe files itself. you should make a shortcut to exe instad of moving it,

I think this post from MC addresses this:

And this one seems to have a workaround:

yes, if you simply drag and drop you are making a copy of the exe. file but it's basically corrupt because it's not really the exe. file. You have to right click on it and then send it to desktop to create a shortcut. when you drag and drop it's not a shortcut. And don't bother pinning to the start menu, either.

Since when does dragging and dropping onto the start menu change the path of the file?

I have several items i've dragged and dropped there and their path has not changed.

Its assumed that this is a shortcut, because its the start menu.

I kind of figured that was the problem but it doesn't make any sense, and it doesnt happen with other files.

Is this just an EXE file thing?

Just right click and pin to start menu.... or make a shortcut and put that on the start menu.

Actually the answer is that Vista and Windows 7 requires that all game icons go into the "GAMES" menu.

If you click the "Start" button (or whatever its called in vista), you'll see in the right "pane" a "Games" text link. (Documents, Pictures, Music, Games)

    Click that.

Note - this is NOT the "Games" folder on the left pane when clicking the start menu.

    The icon is there.

Apparently windows vista and windows 7 requires them to put their icons in there, and they're not allowed to put them anywhere else.

    No.

Clearly your either not running W7 or not running Vista.  Anyway, I have multiple games that did not install themselves to my games folder, and I can still launch them from my taskbar (Rightclick exe, pin to task bar).  Oh, and when I made a shortcut for the steam launch of CXL (Cause you can't just run the normal exe) it made a shortcut on my desktop, there is none in my games folder.  Pinned that to taskbar, deleted shortcut on desktop, still launching fine, not in games folder.

    What do you mean "No".

I was quoting the guy from Monte Cristo, verbatim.

He is the one, in another thread, who said they had to do it that way due to restrictions imposed by Vista and Windows 7.

Clearly I am running Vista. I know what OS I have.

I bought the disk, installed, went into the program files directory and created a shortcut of the .exe onto my desktop.

with Steam I think you need to go into \program files\steam\common and it should be in here, again just shortcut the exe

    I use Vista.

Actually with steam it gives you the option on the install to create an icon on your desktop, you can then move that icon where you like.

I was thinking the same thing but this particular file doesn't like it.

Actually, I am running Vista and, while the statement about putting the shortcut in your games folder may be true, you can also put a shortcut on your desktop which is just more convenient.
