So it is. Observer88, thats a very cool tram system! Is the European City & the suburbs linked? Or are they completely different cities? You use the same tram skin as I do!

Why yes, they're in the same city. I'm no expert of regional architecture, so i just throw everything in. With the trams, well, they came in a pack with some old-style stations including diagonal ones.

    Also, a couple more pics...

Hi folks. What a great topic and great pictures. Growing up in America (Pennsylvania / Western Jersey), I would spend time with my grandpa watching his Lionel trains go around his platform set-up. For some reason, I enjoy watching the trains and trams in SC4 as well-perhaps its because of those good childhood memories. All of these pictures are inspiring. Special mention to Retep and Observer. Very nice layouts, pictures, and tram use. I'll see if I can post some pictures up later on tonight.

    Trust Christ.

Thanks so much! And I lovfed modle trains too.

I'm woring on a new CJ region for my fictional nation. This will be something new. While my other cities mostly developed tram systems as part of their growth, this new one is a car-based city with a much higher population and just two subway lines. The  city is gonna get a brand new tram system soon!!

    @ ROFLyoshi

Nothing yet; Balboa's tram system is still going strong. I haven't updated for a couple of weeks though.

But I am working on a new CJ-- Bordav-- which has a car-based transit culture. I hope to post that in a week or so.

    @Sim City 4 Deluxe

There are mods on the STEX and LEX that allows you to add trams and trains to the game. But, you can only use one tram and one rail at a time. The exceptions is SFBT GLR and VDK's trams which allows one tram and additional trams but you have to use their setups only. (Sorry if I'm overwhelming you with info.)

Since the initial tram system was laid in 1907, Taraville has grown into a major city. Since 2000, it has been the capital of the newly united Syldav Union. (Did you miss that saga? You can catch up here.)

The corridor shown below has been a source of problems for years. The trams are greatly slowed from climbing the hill and the three curves(two of 90 degrees). Furthermore, the stop located at the top of the hill was used by less than 100 passages a day. Since becoming the capital of the Syldav Union, the large avenue to the left led to a bridge to the government complex. Something had to change.

    tarravilesep42451262146.png

Planners came up with a bold--and expensive--proposal: tunnel past the hill! portals would be built in the middle of the roads, with a subway connecting the two surface rail sections. The subway would run from the bottom left of the above picture to the upper right.

Planners estimated that the project would save 10 minutes from the trip. With just 5 minutes of headway between trams, this equaled the savings of pulling two trains out of service which could then be used elsewhere.

First, the south portal was built into the hillside.

    tarravilesep19245126214.png

Here you can better see the two curves the trams had to navigate. The portal would be placed over the short section of avenue on the right. The avenue in turn would be changed into a two-lane street with better pedestrian access. Finally, the large parking lot to the right would be demolished.

The northern portal and surrounding areas, after construction.

A closer view of the developments.

Of course, the roads over the hill had to be rebuilt as well.

    tarravilenov42451262146.png

    And finally, the finished product!

Nice update Retep. I never got around to uploading some tram pics. The city I have them in had has a serious crash in education and I cannot seem to fix it. The city will have to go. Hopefully, I will have a new city with a tram system soon.

    Trust Christ.

Great question! If you recall, there are four main problems with the old layout:

    1. The hill is slow
    2. The station at the top of the hill was under used
    3. There were two major turns
    4. The S curve in transition from avenue to road.
Avoiding the hill by going around it on the street with only deals with the first two issues. There would still be a transition to a road as well as two turns. The subway just allows for people to zip by.

Plus, the route you propose has six (6!) intersections, which would also slow down both car traffic and the trams.

Finally, building the tram line on the other avenue would have meant two major streets under construction at the same time. How disruptive!

I did think about this option a long time before I went with the subway. And thanks for the question: I love explaining my logic!!!
