Putting in things like "" ruins it, because sarcasm only works it it's implied - and that makes it explicit. Unfortunately, there is no way to convey tone of voice with text, so on a forum these things must be done deadpan.

As for the examples of classical music people have posted, they may not be sleep-inducing, but they still are flat. With no percussion, no electronic enhancement, and no words, the music is too stripped-down to really be satisfying. There is a reason why classical or classical-esque music is used in film as background noise: that the sort of thing it's suited to. It's an incomplete picture, it works when coupled with something of interest but it isn't worth much when isolated.

Another point of note: classical music generally sounds better when played really quietly. Good music sounds better when it's played really loud.

I don't mind violence or other forms of obscenity, either. The probem I have with rap is twofold:

1) there's only so much of it I can take at once. I can name plenty of rap songs I like, but taken in album dosage it just starts to drag on longer than I can stay interested in it.

2) it was a pony of limited tricks. I give 2005 as a cutoff date because that's about when it started to get old. By this point, there is nothing new to be done with the genre. Indeed, rap artists have this annoying habit of taking perfectly good old songs and forcing them through a meat grinder. Building a song around sampling may very well be the worst idea in the history of music.

I tell this to Larks all the time, and most people that know me should know, so I figure I'll just re-share in this thread.

I don't like rap, like at all. My favourite genre would definitely be rock, specifically bands from around 1970s-1980s are where most of my favourites come from. There are some 60s and 90s in there too, of course, but the 70s and 80s are where most of them come from. And then newer stuff by older bands, I usually like that too. Metal I'm not to fond of, unless it's British and from the 80s. Don't ask why, it's just how things played out. 3.gif

And if you didn't know, Cheap Trick is my favourite band of all time. Where do you think Chptrk comes from? 3.gif

Oh, I like some jazz too, it's nice to chill to sometimes. And classical is good for when I'm working/studing and don't want silence.

The "good classical" music you posted is Romantic. Romantic is more exciting than Classical though I prefer Bach.

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

Words to live by:
"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

"Do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34
"Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you." Matthew 7:1-3

I draw the metal line at symphonic.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

I usually use the quick-reply box.

Unless I'm doing fancy formatting (ie mod stuff) I use the QR box.

And I generally can listen to any kind of music, given that it has some form of a melody or flow, usually some form of percussion (unless its like, soaring strings and stuff 3.gif ), and has a decent tempo (usually (but not always) the faster the tempo and feel the more likely I'm going to keep listening). There's others too, but I either can't really describe it or my 8AM Saturday brain is mushy.

I don't know what to put here anymore.

My taste of music is very difficult to describe because I like a lot of different songs and music pieces in a lot of categories, mostly from:

Classic rock; Pop; House/Disco/Dance; Rap; jazz, (Metal: Only a very little number of songs, I don't like most of them) sometimes even classic.

I love Dragons!

I had a debate train the novices thing this morning, for most of the morning. Stopped by Target on the way back, picked up Stephen King's Under the Dome and Civ V. Although I still think I need to run out and buy a new graphics card for Civ V...

Anyone know that more recent hip-hop/pop song that goes something along the lines of "You spin me right round?"

Well, thanks to my favourite radio station and youtube, I think I just learned it's kind of a cover of a very random 80s pop song.

On a totally related note, I just watched the most stereotypically odd 80s music video ever...

My favourite song for getting myself to do homework... it psychs you up for you tonnes of physics homework... or that horribly long and pointless maths:

Yup, Flo Rida's "Right Round" copies the chorus structure of Dead or Alive's "You Spin Me Right Round (Like a Record)". You didn't know this?

But it's not a cover and there doesn't seem to be any direct sampling involved. Call it an "homage".
