What, they don't have Google Earth anymore? It's still on my computer, and it still works....

The in-broswer version is nifty, although it lacks all the extra features of the independent version.

back then, it was too much information for my computer to handle, but this new feature is where the "Terrain" feature used to be. It's pretty cool.quote>

The topo map ("Terrain") is still there, under "More"

5225. Just (well, several hours ago) finished Kingdom Hearts.

Ooh, palindromic post number.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

I've never been in a serious accident, although I have been in a few scrape-ups. One was while I was still just a kid (and obviously not the one driving!). Another was while I was learning to drive (everyone gets one...). A third wasn't my fault, someone hit me (clipped the sideview mirror). The fourth one, however, which I was totally responsible for, is the fun story:

Last summer, I stopped last-second at a red light and pulled too far into the intersection. To correct for that, I backed up to get out of the way. But then I neglected to put the car back in drive and when the light turned green, well, you figure out the rest...

Put a a few paint marks on the car behind me. Also put a couple nicks in my license plate and a barely noticable dent in my back bumper, both of which are still there. No big deal.

They warned us about people doing that in Driver's Ed, Duke. I've never been a bystander to it. I rear-ended an F-150 a couple years back. I was on a an on-ramp with a stop sign at the end. I thought the truck in front of me went and I hit the gas to merge but he was still there. I did minimal damage to his truck since I was driving my Civic, which was quite mangled. All cosmetic though except for a busted radiator. That was the first at-fault accident I've ever had. I have had a couple people crash into me, however.

Edit: We got a little off track there.

They taught us to stop behind the line, but they never taught us about what to do if you end up stopped too far forward. This idea of backing up to get out of the intersection I picked up from seeing other drivers do it and thinking "hey, that's a good idea!".

5244. Most drivers I see who cross the line don't bother reversing.

Well, it's not just crossing the line. People stop in front of the line quite naturally and intentionally all the time. You've got a bit of a buffer zone and then the crosswalk to work with, and depending on the intersection geometry you may have a bit of space after that, too.

No, the reason to back up comes when you're stopped so far forward that not only are you over the line but you're physically in the intersection, blocking cross-traffic. At that point, you have to move.

Of course, it's very unusual that you'll find yourself in this situation. Generally it happens when you slam the brakes at a yellow light that you really should have just gone through.
