I bet that would also be a lot safer if you ran out of gas and had to refill it on the side of the road. That only happened to me once but I was on my block.

My first car had the gas tank behind the license plate.

How does anyone ever manage to run out of gas? You know, there's a little gauge that shows how full your tank is. Unless you're completely oblivious to it and/or putting off stopping for gas for whatever reason, it shouldn't happen.

Personally, I stop and get gas when I get down to a quarter tank. No exceptions.

2347. Never let a diesel engine run out of diesel.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

I only ran out the once. I knew I was low so I left my house and was going to get some first thing. I made it to the first light and then stalled. I just walked back to my garage and grabbed some gas outta the tank I had for the lawn mower. Good times.

I almost ran out of gas while lost in Colorado once. Yet again, good times.

Well, yeah, see, there's your problem. I never would have let the tank get anywhere near that low in the first place.

Why do we call the front and back parts of the car the "hood" and "trunk" rather than "bonnet" and "boot"? Simple. With an ocean between two cultures, the lingo develops differently. Nowadays with the internet not so much, although in some cases people still intentionally come up with different terms for American versus British just because it feels like tradition (e.g. "bump" versus "cannon" as the term for a place where two highways meet but do not cross).

Although, on that note, "trunk" is easy to explain: on some early cars there was literally a trunk (as in, the kind made out of wood that you store things in) attached to the back.

2354: I've never heard of two highways meeting but not crossing as being referred to as either, but then again, I've never seen said set-up.

It's not all that uncommon, actually. The first example most people will name is I-80 and I-76 near Youngstown, Ohio (unusual junction for other reasons).

Other examples:

I-80 and I-74 near Moline, Illinois

I-495 and Northern State Parkway, North Hempstead, New York

NY 9A/100 and Taconic State Parkway, Pleastantville, New York

I-95 and US 1, Greenwich, Connecticut

I-95 and US 1, Norwalk, Connecticut

...you get the idea.

Ooo its the I-76/I-80 Ohio Turnpike pass-off.

Korot: Sometimes its a matter of highway priority and need. Some places, you just don't need an interchange (such as where few people will switch highways). Also, turnpikes/tollways tend to only link (via double trumpet or similar) with major arteries.

I don't know what to put here anymore.

Well in the case of I-76 and I-80, I-76 is a toll road. They need the space for toll booths so a simple cloverleaf won't do. I didn't check any of the other links.

Yeah, I live dangerously don't I? 3.gif

It was likely a monetary concern at the time. I was pretty broke in those days.

Edit: Thanks, Korot.

Nonono, you misunderstand. "crossing" is not the same thing as "intersecting". Just look at any of the examples posted and you'll see what I mean. Usually this sort of situation involves an interchange between two highways running parallel to each other.

Makes no difference. The design of the interchange has nothing to do with it. Maybe I should to draw a picture. Diagram of a bump:

What exactly is in the blue circle can be anything so long as it permits at least some movement between the two highways. Now can you see what I mean by "meet but do not cross"?
