Swine Flu? a general discussion

The american swine flu cases is up to about a million.(at least what I read in the news.) and the vaccine is going to be used mostly on thse who have actually cought it? its true, whats more, the vaccine is still another month or so off! and will be available only in small quantities. 15.gif swine flu is also spreading fast.

so need we panic?

the answer is no. The number of US swine flu cases are still at less than 0.4% of the population. so we should only panic if someone in our household is sick.

but... we can, and should prepare.

here are some ordinary tips.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

carry some germx or other hand sanitizer in your car, on the go... use it a few times a day.

if you dont do this, you should was hands frequently.

if someone close to you is sick, wipe surfaces with sanitizing wipes and wash hands far more frequently.

cover your mouth when you sneeze/cough.

shower daily.

If your sick, be polite! stay inside!(added because of Easy Bakes's comment below.)(sorry about the bold.)

public surfaces should be sanitized hourly in busy areas, daily otherwise.

____________

these are to name a few, but if everyone in the world took jsut these measures, swine flu might slow down enought to make a sufficient supply of vaccine before the world got sick! then it would really be a lot easier on everyone worldwide.

This is a generaly discussion, please psot anything related. 4.gif

Note: I wasn't able to search for other threads like this, so if there is, please jsut delete it. thanks.

Lol, my cousins had it, it's gonna come back worse in the Fall, most likely. A vaccine should be out by Thanksgiving!

Bah!  I'm not worried in the least over this so-called swine flu.  Every time there's some kind of major flu outbreak, everyone around me gets it, but I never have.  No reason for me to believe this one is any different.  Besides, if I can survive and function normally with high blood pressure that spiked up to 270/220 on a regular basis for most of my life, I doubt this flu will do me any harm. [i don't have high blood pressure anymore now that I'm on medication for that and I quit smoking...cold turkey].

A million US case's is something to be concerned about.

More so then the few cases we had when every one was panicing.

Now is the time to get this information out in volume.

An addition to the advise above  please stay home if your sick.

Nobody's panicking here. It's just treated as a big joke mostly, even by schools. Though if you are sick with any flu they do now require a doctor's note not for you to stay home sick, but rather to assure them that you are over it and capable of returning. Same for the grocery store I work at.

I don't think that it is going to be that big of a deal based on the past couple months of this outbreak, and even if it is, just think: Hey, the world's overpopulated anyway!

There are over 300 million people in the US, so you have a less than 1/300 chance of getting sick with the disease.  The present statistics indicate that swine flu is an insignificant threat to your average individual.

I knew that would come up eventually, but that's a whole 'nother thread...

I'm not exactly quaking in fear over H1N1, statistically my most likely cause of death is still accidental.

Could it go huge? Sure. It's a matter of time before we get a repeat of the 1918 Spanish flu. If it does, then it does. But in the meantime, I've got other things to worry about.

I think that for 0.4% of the population to have it so early in the season is actually really bad because the numbers "infected" rise exponentially. While it is only slightly worse than other strains of flu, the biggest concern isnt the deaths caused but the cost of everyone having the disease. It seems that swine flu takes like a week or so for someone to get over and if only half of all people got it, and they all had to take a week of work, that would cost so much.

Plus I'd hate to get sick for that long. When I get sick by the second day Im dreading that disgusting taste you get in your throat, and the worst part is when you begin to crave certain foods but whatever you eat taste like vomit...

On the note, I can see how washing your hands would prevent spread of the disease, but how are hand sanitizers supposed to stop flu from spreading when its actually a virus?

That may be true, but look at it this way: My high school has over 1500 students, and is one of about 50 in the Hampton Roads metro. If 1/300of them get swine flu, then that would be 5 cases at one high school, and potentially 250 regionwide, which admittedly doesn't sound that bad, but put 5 kids infected into one high school, and it will spread fast, especially considering the fact that most kids aren't going to want to miss school just for the flu. We've already had a couple deaths, in fact there was another one just yesterday.

@ hym, This flu is still going to be as bad/ or worse than the seasonal flu, we should be just as worried. The only reason I would be worried is because we don't have much knowledge about it, and so far, no vaccine.

I saw on the news channels that swine flu has claimed the life of Ecuador's security chief. Bet that rattled some people in S America.

I wouldn't go as far as saying I'm immune, just that I have a strong immune system, I rarely catch a cold, or the flu.  You may think you know all the facts, but who's to say the facts are correct?  Just because a so-called expert or experts say it's so, doesn't mean it is.20.gif

I was just pointing out that this wave  is now more to be concerned about then the dozen or so cases when it started.

We have  a million+ cases of this now yet when there was just one or 2 in certain ares they shut the schools down.

Now its ,we will be ok with out shutting down the schools.

Thats why I say not to panic, but there really is very little immunity, and I also hear that its worse than the seasonal flu. there is good news, though. the vaccine might be ready early! and they think it might actually be more effective than originally thought! yay!

Kryptowhite: you actually liked having it? or did they just close your school?

I have H1N1 right now. It kind of sucks, its mostly annoying than anything else. The worst part is the cough, it gets you out of breath. But its not as bad as its hyped up to be, so while you should worry, you shouldn't.

What are the other symptoms for you? many people are probably wondering what the symptoms of H1N1 are.

and the cough? I know... I don't have H1N1.(I thought I did, buts its just a really really bad cold.) but I once had a cough that was so bad that I couldn't really breath for 5 minutes at a time.

I think I had it back in April. It's more contagious but less severe than the normal flu. They wont give the first shots to people who already had it as they would already be immune.

I work for a school district, we are getting prepared for it. We are told it will likely effect around 20% of the US Population. Though severe, it typically becomes fatal for those with pre-existing health conditions because it weakens your immune system, so its not the actually flu virus that kills you. Just stay home if your sick, eat healthy, and get lots of rest.

I just see it as just another form of hysteria. Geez, these things are becoming so trendy all of a sudden. And at this point, we have multiple Apocalyptic Hysterias going on at the same time: 2012, Swine Flu, and Iranian Nuclear whatever (I guess that's not that much of an apocalyptic hysteria, but still...) Next thing you know, someone will discover that some other random source of fear is going to take control of our brains and destroy the planet! OH NOES!

I got swine flu.  Really, it's not that bad.  No worse than regular flu.  The only issue is that there isn't a vaccine just yet, so everyone was causing mass pandemonium when it came out last year.  The key is to get to a doctor the minute you are sure that you have the flu.  They'll write you a prescription for TamiFlu, which, if taken in the first couple of days of symptoms, really works wonders.  The doctor I went to told me to go home and stay there for a week.  One of the best weeks of my life. 3.gif

The CDC has estimated that as much as 50% of the US population with get some variation of the flu this year, but I think the bit about 90K people dying from it is over-hyped.  Maybe I'm just out of the loop, but I'm not aware of any cases of swine flu actually killing anyone in the US so far.

I'm pretty sure there have been deaths in the US. If not you've been amazingly lucky over there. There have been 178 deaths from swine flu in Australia.  Pregnant women appear to be at particular risk.

But there is a vaccine now, and a mass vaccination program started in Australia this week. Everyone over ten years old can get it free here. I think I'll be queuing up as soon as my workplace's staff program kicks off.

I heard the US was planning a mass vaccination program as well, and according to the 7:30 Report last night Australia is producing a proportion of the vaccine for that program as well.

There have been 3 that i have heard of in the Dallas area in the last week or so. one was a young girl but had other ongoing health issues ( they did not say what those were)

Texas is supposedly getting several million of the H1N1 flu vaccine, many less then they were expecting.

from a story i just heard they will only be giveing them to children younger then 5. But every one else is encouraged to get the regular one.
