Question about elevated rail

Does an elevated rail station have to be facing the street (arrow pointing to the street, flush on all three tiles) to work?  The problem being if you have the elevated rail running next to the street it totally forecloses development on the street, as the street is blocked!  Any tips?  (for clarity i'm talking about elevated rail as the extension of the subway above ground.  I'm not talking about elevated "heavy" rail, or ground-light-rail either).

Here is what i'm talking about, you can see that the el-rail is blocking any potential zoning from touching the road:

RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE***EEEEEEEEEEE***EEEEEEE

R=road

E=elevated rail line

***=elevated rail station

as long as a road/st./avenue is touching one square, it'll work.

You can even have one passing under the el rail for it to work :-

EEEEEEEEEEE***EEEEEEEEEEEEE

...................................R

The "E" on the right side of the station has the road going under it btw :-D

EDIT: Sorry about the dots, it wouldnt work without them

The work-around would be to put one-way roads on either side of the elevated rail or monorail.

The other option (at least for el. rail) is to use the NAM's el. rail over road pieces. There are even a few stations that can work in perfect conjunction with these pieces too.

For mono and el stations, its often useful to place a functioning parking lot. As I recall they cannot serve auto traffic as they only accept pedestrians.. same reason i usually put bus station there too.. and you can use ped malls to connect things if you want as it acts like roads for people... at any rate my point is you have to have appropriate traffic that has a place to go
