Hello all,

first I would like to thank you for this useful website & forum, and also for your time.

I haven't been playing SC4 for a while, and as a lover of this game (I have been playing this since the first, on SNES ...), I wanted to get back to SC4. I have a new computer since the last time I have played.

I have a bug with the view of new regions, but I have not found topics related to this kind of problem.

1. The version of Sim City 4 : 1.0.272.0 , no mods.

2.

A map I have dl

A map I've created to train

img299.imageshack.us/img299/484/totozone1248124003.png

3.

Intel Core 2Duo E8400

2Go RAM

ATI RADEON HD 3870x2

Drivers up to date

4.

I have a 1920*1080 screen. I tried to change the resolution to 800*600 or anything else, also modifing the graphical options, or trying windowed mode : no change.

I have no bug when playing the cities, excepted that on the first region (first screen) I cannot easily select the little areas as the "white-blue squares" of the biggest near are in front of the "white-blue square" of the little ones.

Changing regions options (cities limits/names) do nothing.

Hope someone will know how to fix this.

Thank for your help.

G.

i too have had this problem for the better part of a year. i too bought a new computer with an ati radion card. changing from hardware to software render and vise versa does nothing. i believe it is a case of sc4 not liking ati, but rather nvidia cards, but i cant verify this. my brothers laptop has an nvidia card, and he has no problems, and my old cpu had an nvidia card also.

if anyone can verify this, or disprove it, and offer a better explanation it would be greatly appreciated.

I am not familiar with that version of the game, is it a MAC version, or Euro version?

You might try using a custom resolution if you have a wide screen monitor.  Add a tag to the shortcut target:

"C:\Program Files\Simcity 4\Apps\SimCity 4.exe" -CustomResolution:enabled -r1440x900x32 -f -intro:off

I have used 4 versions of ATI cards, but in 2005 ATI changed the driver so I had to start using software rendering with XP.  I can use hardware rendering with Vista.

i cant talk for guiligui, but i have a straight up pc version of the game. have a custom resolution set for the game as i have a 24inch wide screen monitor. updated monitor and hardware drivers etc. havent been able to find anything about this problem on the net, figured it was just one of those things that id have to live with. have the prob both with and without updates and plugins. am running windows xp, not vista, but had xp on old pc and had no problems. i really am stumped by this little graphics glitch.

Version 1.0.272.0  is the SimCity 4 (vanilla) after being patched with Update 2. Don't know if that has anything to do with the problem or not. I've seen posts about similar problems being solved by switching to software mode as noypi07 mentioned (and some that haven't). For what it's worth...

    Hello,

    thks for your replys.

Yes this version is the (french) vanilla version updated with patch 2.

I finally found how to avoid this graphical bug by reinstalling the map (grayscale jpg) I've downloaded in windowed mode with a "classic" resolution (1280 * 1064).

As I have the same bug with a map I created, I think that SC4 & my graphic card don't like that I manipulate map in an "exotic" resolution ( when I reinstalled the game, I have immediately change the exe link with a custom resolution).

I haven't made any test to verify this hypothesis, but after playing a couple of hours (in windowed mode, finally it's better ; ) ), no bug appeared ...

So it's solved, or avoided. I can change the tittle of the subject but as seattlesonics4life is still concerned, I'll wait a litlle ...

FYI I have the exact same graphics card as the OP and the same problem (to a lesser extent).

I am having the same problem on windows 7.  Changing resolution did not help.  I'm on an alienware with two ATI Radeon HD 5670 cards.

This bug almost makes it unplayable.  I have to save and then delete cities if I want to play the cities behind them.  (Otherwise the big yellow squareness blocks out the cities in back of it.)

I have the same problem with and without NAM.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled the program.  I've tried to use every resolution and graphics option the game gives you in the region map, to no avail.  HELP!  (Pretty please.)

In a word, try turning off one of your GPUs.  This game is a legacy production from 2003.  Can't stand any fancy graphics options.  Make sure all your 3D options are set to "application selected".  Systems like yours is like taking a sledge hammer to a gnat.

I'd done all that with the 3D options.  Those solutions were easy to find with google, even if they didn't work.  I did not know it was even possible to turn off a GPU.  Is it possible to have it only turn off when the game is on?  Or, more useful, is it possible to set the game to only run on one GPU while the other handles everything else?

    Changing resolution did not help.

That's not very precise information - to what resolution did you change your display settings?

Since it is a build by alienware, it should have a manual that covers that.  If not, ask them.

From my perspective it was perfectly precise, otoh you're not able to read my mind.  I tried every setting the game offered.  Oh, and thx Nonny.  :)

A couple of command line mods will probably help you:

    -CustomResolution:Enabled -rhhhhxwwwwxpp

    Where:

hhhh is the horizontal resolution in pixels

    wwww is the vertical resolution

pp is either 16 or 32 for colour depth.

Here is my command line for an example:

    "C:/Program Files (x86)/Maxis/SimCity 4 Deluxe/Apps/SimCity 4.exe"  -intro:off -CustomResolution:enabled -r1920x1080x32 -d:software  -f -CPUcount:1

If you loaded your game normally, this will be found in your short cut that starts the game.  It is called Target.  When you make changes be sure you press the Apply button.
