Straightening out diagonal traffic jams

Suppose you have a grid of streets and/or roads with a diagonal road cutting right through it.  (Such as in the "Big City" tutorial that comes with the "Timbuktu" region.)

The traffic jams can become horrendous, with vehicles turning onto the diagonal from a grid street/road, only to turn off again onto another one within a block or two.

What are some cool ways to straighten out such a mess?

One-way roads aren't always feasible when the grid isn't balanced to permit proper out-and-back return.

Roundabouts aren't always feasible when you've got too many roads converging at one point (like a North-south street, an east-west street, and a diagonal road, all meeting at one point).

Any other ideas?  Would anything from the NAM be immediately applicable to this problem?

The only real solution is to provide a lot of mass transit. Build a subway route directly under it and put park and ride facilities near the stations.

A highway system may be another solution, although if you've already built up your downtown, be prepared to bulldoze quite a few buildings.

Roflyoshi: I use Flexibale underpasses and elevated roads, to solve my interchanges, (this is not road interchanges, this is major avenue highway ones)

the big city tutorial isn't in SC4 vanilla so he does have RH

Priority numero uno would be to get the NAM if you don't have it.

Second get cars off the roads!! Cars suck in this game.. they cause pollution and traffic and decrease desirablity. Bus stops placed liberally throughout the city will take cars off the road and usually the cost of running them is more than offset by the fares from sims using them. If you are mostly low density consider a bus stop and parking garage combo. Anything that gets sims to walk is a good thing if you ask me.

Yeah, observing how short of distances they are willing to walk, it appears they could really use the exercise :-D
