No JOBS In NYC - Please Help!

I'm trying to create an accurate New York City, and I created the region precisely as New York is (not the crappy pre-made one the game gives you), and I started with Lower Manhattan/Brooklyn.  There are a good mix of medium/high density residential blocks and medium density commercial services spreaded around Manhattan, and most of the industrial zones are over in Brooklyn.  But half the apartment buildings and tenements in SoHo and Greenwich village are complaining commute is too long and have been abandoned!  There's a small industrial section in Lower West Side and plenty of commercial office so I don't know what they're complaining about... and I installed a Subway service no-one is using, and there are three bridges going over to Brooklyn (Brooklyn, Manhattan and Williamsburg).

The attached image shows a view of Downtown, which is mainly commercial and doesn't look too bad, and the shot below it is from Canal Street upwards, of SoHo and Greenwich Village, where no-one can find work.

I know and it's always annoyed me... but if anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it. And not NAM, I want to do it with little modification.

I wouldn't consider the NAM as a modification, more like a correction and an expansion pack in one...

But at any rate, there are some things you can do.

First, have you tried adding more jobs? I find that the best job-resident balance is having two residents for every job. If your Residential is more than twice the combined C & I population, you should consider zoning for more jobs.

Second, are you sure that the jobs you have are right for your sims? Each residential wealth level demands different kinds of jobs. Within each wealth level, each EDUCATION level also causes different demands for different jobs. If your sims are highly educated, they will need more High Tech and Office jobs, while less educated sims require dirty industry and manufacturing and commercial services. To control which kind of commercial or industrial jobs come up, use the desirability charts for each individual job type, and zone where it is green for the jobs you need. If you're trying for a very good recreation of New York, you should keep your education level up to get all those commercial office high rises.

This might not apply to your case since it looks like all wealth levels can't find jobs. Keep zoning for jobs. I will also say that High tech is very sensitive to pollution. If your sims are demanding high tech, try demolishing all the dirty industry (and maybe some of the manufacturing) near the Lower West Side (next to the existing HT). This should allow more space for HT to grow, and some of your higher wealth sims should start coming back.

Thanks a lot yunxiang. I know it has a lot to do with wealth levels, since a lot of the apartment buildings have been moved in by $ wealth Sims when the buildings are $$ or $$$ wealth. I think I'm okay for education though; I have about 5 or 6 schools (inc. a private school), and I have NYU ready to plant... and a museum, but I'm trying to keep my income higher than expenses and I don't want to mess around too much with tax or the demand for the right jobs will be even lower.

Well no offense, but its impossible to create a recreation anywhere near accurate of new york if your not going to use mods and custom content. If you really want it to look accurate, I suggest you look up hanson or lucky7's recreations, both have been very successful recreating new york, and i'm sure you'll be able to pick up some good pointers there.

Commute time is really annoying though, its really hard to keep them happy. Have you made the subway system yet? If not, I would set up a subway, that might help your problem a bit.

are you sure that you have enough jobs??? The work zot can also mean that hte unemployment rates are high... You might try to create more highways, that may help a bit.

also, diagonal roads are less efficient than straight roads, but I don't think that that is the problem. is the area new??? sometimes rapidly created areas on older computers can cause this bug for as long as a few years after the creation of a new area!!!

    I hope that this helps.
