Subways Hardly Work

yeah, the system is pretty much useless. i have tons of stations and lines all over my city, but my sims prefer to take the bus instead. i only get about 5,000 commuters on the subway, and about 30,000 bus commuters in a population of about 100,000!!!! that sucks. personally, i wish sim city 4 would take you more in depth on creating a realistic subway system and maybe even allow you to design your own stations...

Dont give them an alternative. I have a subway station on most C and I blocks and one for every 16 blocks R with a parking garage. It has a much bigger capacity than busses and as far as i know brings in a lot more money when you have 90% of your sims using it

Get NAM it should fix your usage issue and increase the ratio of stations in R zones. I have most people using Bus (170,000) Car (120,000) and Subway (120,000) in a population of 430,000.

I have never had any problems with subways... try making a grid of subway lines, then placing as many subway stations in all the places you would place a bus stop.(In other words, just set it up like you would the bus...) yuo can parallel subway lines too, they CAN get crowded underground too!

I hope that this helps.

I use GLR, Subway and El Rail together to form one huge line; and with Sim Z in NAM, then the usage increases so much. Try to use all 3 networks together. Even try to link HSR if you want.

I use a subway station with every bus station, all in walking distance for the sims. The subways should be connected in such a way the the travel times aren't excessive.

Ground Light Rail (GLR), or trams is a hack of the El-Rail to make the El-Rail on the ground or a road, like a tram. It comes standard with the NAM, although you'll have to download stations separately.

Rail, is exactly as you'd expect.

It's all about having your mass transit system be slightly more efficient (ie: quicker) than driving.  Over a year ago, I stumbled across Greyveil's Transportation tutorial while trying to figure out my subway systems.   I haven't had a problem since.

https://www.simtropolis.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=23&threadid=61381&STARTPAGE=1&FTVAR_FORUMVIEWTMP=Linear

The current city I'm working uses parking garages, busses, rails, monorails, subways, and ferries to supplement the road system.  I get less than 20% car use (probably closer to 10%).  Because sims have to hop from one form of mass transit to another, I have a very healthy amount of cash flowing into the kitty on a monthly basis thanks to mass transit fares too.

Use the simulation Z I'd say. It gets people using the subway like no tomorrow. The downside is that it also gets less people on the bus as it is slower. I use the BTM version v1.1a (most recent) of the Z simulator. Bullet train (get the BTM) is the MOST commonly used way of transportation in my city; I'd estimate that 85-90% of people use the bullet train to get to work.

On the downside, I had to mod the monorail stations that I downloaded to take 50000 people or they'd be horribly crowded.

I have almost the opposite problem using Simulator Z in NAM.. everyone, including the rich folks, insist on using the subways and the buses, cars, and monorails hardly get any usage. It's funny seeing your roads nearly empty in the Traffic view and subways all in red even when you double or triple tube them.. btw, I'm using the maximum capacity setting in Z.

I use the subusway stations (not sure where i got them from sorry :-P).

The sims tend to get on one or the other and can swap multiple times along the way depending on the state of the roads, subway or the type of station on the other end.

The great thing is, it can just be a bus stop until you can afford a subway system

My subways are getting lousy usage, too. But I'm getting over 30,000 a day on some parts of my streetcar network, so I'm not sweating it too much. My city's transportation department is turning a profit based entirely on mass transit fares.

GLR works! I cannot stress that enough! Thankyou, NAM team!

But wow, how much exactly is your mass transit fares? I'd love to know.

And g'day bigthing, I think you are talking about the Roadtop Mass Transit Mod.

Hey ROFLyoshi,

I'm in much the same boat as RedImperator, though I don't use any GLR.   Here's an image of my mass transit usage, please forgive my poor photoshop skills.

mass_transit_usage.jpg

Some more stats on this particular city:

Resident Population: just shy of 605 thousand

Age: 98 years

Monthly Income: $248,425

Monthly Expenses: $184,725

Bankroll: almost $17 million

You need the BTM version of Z to get people to use the monorail. The simulation Z has a bias towards cars and subways. Subways are the fastest way to get around so, people keep on using them.

I wonder what things are like with the trams?
